🔥 BUTANO CANYON — WE’RE COMING YOUR WAY! 🌲 Brush Hog Tree Care will be in Pescadero on September 8 supporting the Neighborhood Chipping Program organized by Fire Safe San Mateo County

This is a great opportunity to turn the brush and small woody vegetation you’ve cleared from around your property into chipped material—while helping reduce wildfire fuels in your neighborhood.

The program follows a simple “You Cut, We Chip” model: homeowners prepare their piles of vegetation, and the chipper crew takes care of the rest. 🌿➡️🪵

Did you know? Putting rocks at the base of your trees damages the root systems by compacting soil, trapping excessive heat, starving soil biology of organic matter, and blocking water and oxygen exchange. 🪨 🚫

Instead of using rocks, you can apply a thin layer of wood mulch, but be sure to keep it a few inches away from the trunk. No volcano mulching! 🌋🚫

How Rocks Hurt Trees
Soil compaction: Heavy rocks press down on the earth, crushing the tiny air pockets that roots need to breathe.

Extreme heat: Stones—especially dark ones—absorb and radiate intense heat into the bark and shallow roots.

Zero nutrients: Unlike mulch, rocks do not break down to feed the soil or support beneficial microbes and earthworms.

Moisture issues: Rocks can trap unwanted moisture against the trunk, causing rot, or block rainwater from soaking into the root zone.

These issues put your trees under stress ➡️ stressed trees invite pests and disease ➡️ tree failure and mortality.

Think twice when re-landscaping. Help support healthy and thriving trees 🌳
