We're on Japanese TV.

Harbor Time (港時間), a show on TV Asahi about life around the ocean, did a two-minute feature on David and the work we do at Hawaii Off-Grid and Surf Block. Homes that make their own power and water. Walls built from recycled surfboard foam, right here on Maui.

It means a lot to see this work reach all the way to Japan.

Watch the full feature on our YouTube. Link in bio.

Two Emmys.

Last weekend, our story won two 2026 Northern California Emmy Awards: Business/Consumer, News or Long Form Content, and Editor, Content, Short or Long Form. It's recognition we share with the team at Pacific Story Tellers, who told it with so much heart.

The awards are humbling, but they aren't the point. The film is about a different way of building in Hawaiʻi: homes that make their own power and water, designed to stand on their own and to serve the people and the land around them. That's only possible because of every client who trusted the vision and every crew member who built it into something real.

Mahalo to everyone who's been part of this journey off the grid. We're just getting started.

Many hands. The volunteers who showed up for the Bunkhouse came to Lahaina through Habitat for Humanity, traveling all the way from Carthage College in Wisconsin to help build the first mass timber Habitat for Humanity home on Maui. Rebuilding is never the work of one team alone. It takes a community, and sometimes that community reaches across an ocean. Mahalo to everyone who lent a hand.

Grid-tied, but storm-ready.

You do not have to go fully off-grid to keep the lights on. Solar makes the power, a home battery stores it, and your essentials keep running through an outage with no generator to fuel. It works even if you stay connected to the grid.

Ask us about backup power for your home.

The grid went dark. Our homes didn't.

More than 250,000 homes and businesses across Hawai'i lost power after Tropical Storm Lala, with upcountry Maui among the hardest hit. Our off-grid homes make their own power with solar and store it in batteries, so the lights stayed on.

If you want to be ready for the next storm, even while staying connected to the grid, we can help. Call us for a consultation.

The roof came first. In Hawi, the plan is organized around the south-facing solar array. The systems lead, and the house follows. Entirely off the grid: integrated photovoltaics, on-site water catchment, and wastewater treated on site, wrapped in mass timber and glass that open to the view.

In his own words. Our co-founder David Sellers sat down with Texas Architect for the magazine's Water issue, on off-grid design, resilience, and building through the housing and climate crises. He calls it prosperity through resiliency: homes that make their own power and water, sequester more carbon than they release, and still pencil out. That success is what lets the studio give up to 30 percent of its work at reduced fee or pro bono. Read the full Q&A in Texas Architect, link in bio.

The Bunkhouse blessing. The community came together in Lahaina to bless the first mass timber home in Habitat for Humanity's history, a bunkhouse for the volunteers rebuilding the town. Built with, and for, the people of Maui.

Off the grid, on purpose. Every home we design makes its own power, catches its own water, and treats its own waste on site. A south-facing solar array and battery storage carry the house across the year, rain is caught off the roof and filtered for the home, and wastewater is treated on site and returned to the land. Net zero, by design.

The first mass timber home in Habitat for Humanity's history, rising in Lahaina. Habitat Maui's Matt Bachman on rebuilding after the fires, and Hawaii Off-Grid's David Sellers on the mass timber vision: faster, cheaper, more affordable homes, and a model Habitat can build again across Hawaii.
