Your attic tells a pest tech more than almost any other room in the house.

Start with the bait station. Nothing chewed on this block, which is the answer you want, because it means there are no rodents up here. The block gets swapped anyway, since an old one stops being attractive.

Ever wonder what is actually going into your house on a pest service?

Three things come off the truck on a renewal visit. Glue boards, which are there for bugs. Snap traps, which go up on the sill plates or down low depending on where the customer prefers them. And bait blocks, which sit inside the little bait stations.

The bait is the part people ask about. A mouse goes in and eats the block, then goes out for a drink of water. That activates the chemical and dries the mouse out, and hydrating becomes impossible.

All a mouse needs to get into your house is a gap the size of a penny.

We found one in a customer's basement, along an exterior wall, so the next job is working out how it got in. Around a house that usually means the AC lines, the electrical lines, or anything else that runs through the siding. If a pencil fits in the hole, a mouse can use it.

Copper mesh and spray foam close it up, and which one we reach for depends on how big the gap is.

As our tech puts it: once they have a mile, they'll turn it into a marathon.

Yellow jackets in a tree stump, start to finish.

A nest this close to the house is the kind of call we get all summer. The treatment is 99 percent talc powder and 1 percent insecticide, dusted straight into the entry point, and the suit goes on either way.

And no, these are not honeybees. They are yellow jackets, and they kill honeybees.

That wet spot on the kitchen ceiling? It was not a leak.

Yellowjackets were entering under the vinyl siding at the rear of the home and building a nest above the sheetrock. Their secretions make the ceiling look damp, so a lot of homeowners assume they have a plumbing problem. Hennebry treated the area with dust and liquid. Because yellowjackets are social insects, they carry the product back into the colony and wipe it out over time. Once activity stops, the nest comes out by hand or with a shop vac, a little product is left for any stragglers, the walls get wiped down, and the sheetrock is taped until it can be replaced.

Ever notice wasps get way more aggressive in late summer?

There is a real reason for it. Through spring and early summer, worker yellowjackets feed on sugary secretions that come straight from their own larvae. By late summer the queen slows down and that food source dries up, so the workers go hunting for sugar in your ripe fruit, soda, trash cans and outdoor dining areas.
