Bad case of ants? Here is how we track them down.

A family had just moved into this house and the call was ants in the kitchen. We still check the attic, basement and garage on every visit, because the problem is not always where you see it. Under the sink was clean, with no droppings and no open entry points. Outside, the ant line on the trim showed us exactly where they were getting in. The small ones are the scouts. Then gel bait goes into the cracks and crevices, and the ants carry it back to the rest of the colony.

See the dust falling out of that beam? That is beetle damage.

We were in the basement of a house built in 1860, and this beam is full of tiny pinholes where beetles have been going in and out for years. Back then wood came straight out of the ground and went into the house untreated. The good news: this is an old issue, not a new one, and the beam has another one sistered right next to it, so it is still structurally sound. And the damp wood by the bathroom? That is moisture damage, not beetles or termites. Knowing the difference is the whole point of an inspection.

October is when the pests move in.

As the nights turn cold across Northern New Jersey, mice go hunting for warmth and squeeze through the smallest gaps in a foundation. Wasps are at their most aggressive late in the season. And mulch piled against the house gives ants, spiders and crickets a covered path inside. The fix is simple: inspect, treat, and seal the entry points before winter sets in.

Look at the size of this nest.

We found it in a barn, built right over a stack of cardboard boxes. Layer on layer of paper, wrapped around the corners and climbing the wall behind them. It came out of the barn in pieces. Nests like this do not show up overnight. They grow all season in the spots nobody checks, and they are not only a barn problem. The last shots in this reel are a nest tucked into the peak of a house, right above a second story window.
