TORNADO RISK TODAY ACROSS TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA🌪️⚠️flooding isn't the only concern today - severe storms are expected to intensify this afternoon and evening, bringing the potential for a few tornadoes, damaging wind gusts, and large hail across parts of the Southern Plains!
The tornado risk includes parts of southwestern, central, and southern Oklahoma into western and northern Texas, including areas near Oklahoma City, Norman, Edmond, Lawton, and Wichita Falls.
A very moist and unstable atmosphere, combined with strengthening winds higher in the atmosphere, will support the development of organized storms. Some storms could initially become supercells, capable of producing rotating updrafts and potentially a tornado.
The greatest concern for storm redevelopment and intensification will be near southwest Oklahoma and the Texas South Plains and Low Rolling Plains, where boundaries left behind by earlier thunderstorms could help focus additional severe weather.
The severe risk will increase this afternoon and continue into the evening. As winds closer to the surface strengthen around sunset, the environment could become more supportive of rotating storms. However, storms are also expected to organize into lines and bowing segments, with damaging straight-line winds becoming the primary threat later this evening.
A few tornadoes are possible across Texas and Oklahoma today, although damaging winds and large hail will also be significant concerns. Not everyone will experience severe weather, but residents across the risk area should remain weather-aware, have multiple ways to receive warnings, and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued🌪️⚠️
