Is your neighborhood eligible for the $10,000 FORTIFIED roof grant? 🏠💪

Strengthen Mississippi Homes pays up to $10,000 toward a FORTIFIED roof, paid to the contractor after IBHS certification. It's for owner-occupied homes with a homestead exemption (no rentals), selection is by lottery, and you must use an approved contractor.

📅 2026: only MS Windstorm Underwriting Association (wind pool) policyholders with 3 straight years of coverage.
📅 2027: statewide grants expected, pending a legislative fix.

📍 A proposed MID rule (comments close Oct 29) would require Hancock, Harrison & Jackson County homes to be in areas enforcing current building codes. As of spring 2026 reports, Bay St. Louis, Diamondhead, Waveland, Biloxi, Long Beach & Pass Christian were in good shape. Rules are proposed and may change.

We hope you and your family came through Isaias safely. 💙 If your roof took a hit, here's what to do next, in order:

1️⃣ Safety first. Stay away from downed power lines and standing water, and please don't climb on your roof. Wait until officials say it's safe to be out.
2️⃣ Document everything. Take photos and video of all damage, outside and inside, BEFORE you clean up or move anything.
3️⃣ Prevent more damage. Cover leaks or openings only if you can do it safely from the ground or inside. Otherwise, call a professional.
4️⃣ Keep every receipt for tarps, repairs, supplies and hotel stays.
5️⃣ Call your insurance company promptly to report the claim, and write down your claim number.
6️⃣ Get a professional inspection from a licensed, local roofer who can document the damage.

⚠️ BEWARE OF STORM CHASERS. After every big storm, out-of-town crews show up knocking on doors. Protect yourself:
• Ask for a Mississippi contractor license and a local address (you can look up licenses with the Mississippi State Board of Contractors at msboc.us)
• Never pay large sums up front
• Don't sign a contract on the spot. Take your time and get it in writing.

Hurricane Isaias update as of 8 PM CDT Friday

🌀 Isaias is a Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds, moving north at 19 mph.
📍 The center is about 50 miles east-southeast of Pensacola and nearing landfall in the western Florida Panhandle, per NHC.
💨 A 102 mph gust was recently reported at Pensacola City Hall.
🌊 NHC says water levels are rising rapidly along the coast. A Storm Surge Warning remains in effect from the Mouth of the Mississippi River to the Suwannee River, with 3–5 ft of surge possible from the Mouth of the Mississippi to Dauphin Island.
⚠️ Hurricane Warning from Ocean Springs east; Tropical Storm Warning west of Ocean Springs.

For the MS Coast tonight: expect tropical-storm-force winds, rain bands and elevated water. Conditions should gradually improve Saturday as Isaias moves inland across Alabama, per the NHC forecast track.

Please stay inside, and don't drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don't drown. Wait for the all-clear from local officials before going outside to check on your roof or property. For the latest, follow nhc.noaa.gov, weather.gov and MEMA (msema.org).

Hurricane Isaias update as of 12 PM CDT Friday

🌀 Isaias is a Category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds, moving NNE at 16 mph, about 160 miles south of Pensacola (NHC Advisory #12 + 12 PM update).
📍 NHC expects the center to reach the western Florida Panhandle coast this evening, at or near major hurricane strength.
🌊 A Storm Surge Warning covers the MS Coast, with 3–5 ft of surge possible from the Mouth of the Mississippi to Dauphin Island.
⚠️ Hurricane Warning from Ocean Springs east (southern Jackson Co.). Tropical Storm Warning for Hancock, Harrison, northern Jackson and George counties. Tropical Storm Watch for Stone County.
💨 Even without a direct hit, expect gusty winds, rain bands and rising water along the Coast today into tonight.

Please finish preparations now, stay off the roads once conditions worsen, and follow evacuation orders if you get them. For the latest, follow nhc.noaa.gov, weather.gov and MEMA (msema.org), plus your county emergency management. Forecasts can change.

⚠️ Hurricane Isaias: prep today, while it's still safe.

Neighbors, Isaias is expected to approach the northern Gulf Coast as a dangerous hurricane, and warnings are in effect for our coast. Please follow the National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov), your local National Weather Service office, MEMA and your county emergency management for the latest. Conditions can change fast.

If you have time today, here's a quick roof and home checklist:

✅ Secure loose items: patio furniture, grills, toys, trash cans and planters can become projectiles. Bring them inside or tie them down.
✅ Clear gutters and drains, but only from the ground and only if it's safe, so rain can drain away from your roof and foundation.
✅ Take photos and video of your roof, home and belongings NOW. Dated "before" pictures help any insurance claim.
✅ Find your policy: save your policy number and your agent's phone number in your phone, and keep a copy in a waterproof bag.
✅ Charge everything: phones, power banks and flashlights. Grab spare batteries.
⛔ Stay off the roof. Never climb on a roof as a storm approaches.
⛔ No last-minute tree trimming if winds are already rising. It isn't worth the risk.
✅ Know your plan and your evacuation zone, and listen to local officials.
