Extreme constraints can be met with extreme creativity. Ten years ago MJ and I put that idea to the test, building a tiny house on a trailer as our lake retreat in the Adirondacks.
Fitting a family of four into an 8x24 tiny house on wheels does not leave room for anything but smart thinking. Every layout decision had to work harder, storage had to be inventive, and finishes had to hold up to kids, dogs and lake weather year after year. We built it ourselves in our driveway over four intense months, then found the nerve to tow it up to Tupper Lake.
A decade of stays there has taught us the same lesson again and again. The projects that challenge us and push against our assumptions are the ones that change us and take us to the next level. Our best work often comes out when the constraints are tightest, not when we have the most room to work with.

Fifteen years later, people still stop to compliment this Middle Beach cottage, its craftsmanship, landscaping and historic character. What they never see is everything hidden underneath.

Solar panels discretely recessed into the dormers. Solar thermal panels cooling those panels while heating domestic hot water. A geothermal system warming the floors and cooling the air. A 5,000 gallon cistern hidden inside the potting shed foundation, collecting roof water for irrigation. storm protection with terraced grades and a full commercial waterproofing system protecting the basement. A battery bank big enough to run the house off grid, which it did for days during both Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, no generator needed. Resilience and performance, carefully integrated into a beautiful home.

Exciting news about our Eagleview project at 405 Whitfield St in Guilford. We've secured all approvals and are in negotiations with contractors to begin work on the next phase on this beautiful property.
We pivoted from a townhome design toward condo flats to add 6 additional units. The new plan includes two buildings, each with six 2,400 sf flats, plus a stunning 3,600 sf penthouse with a huge roof deck. We're keeping the same shoreline architectural style that defines the project.
We can't wait to see construction activity start again.

Twelve years ago, CK Architects designed a full home renovation in Madison, CT. Last month the new owners invited us back to reimagine the first floor and create a main bedroom suite.
Walking through a space you designed a decade later, still loved and so well maintained, is one of the best parts of this work. Grateful to be trusted with the next chapter of this home.

Exciting news! We are thrilled to be working with ARD Builders on a new modern shoreline residence in Branford, CT. This one is a challenge we love: a very tight lot on a point with views in every direction.
The design takes full advantage of the site. The house is elevated on piers, keeping it safely above the flood zone while opening up the ground level. Dramatic cantilevered balconies provides outdoor living on all levels and an expansive roof deck with elevator access gives you the full 360 experience, whether you are watching the sunset or entertaining on a summer evening.

We are breaking ground at Sachem Head, and this one has a story worth telling.

From the street, the home is quiet, contextual, modest, unimposing — exactly the way it should be in a neighborhood like this. But step around back and there is an entirely different world waiting. The tired 1950’s home needed to be replaced, but we were able to integrate the existing pool, hot tub and garage seamlessly into the design for the new house. A multi-level terrace, outdoor kitchen and screened porch connect the new living spaces to the existing.

We are proud to be building alongside Vicino Builder, LLC on this project. More updates to come as the ground starts to move.

Some properties are iconic and we have the privilege of working on restoring this iconic farmhouse and barn in Guilford. These buildings had stories written into every timber and every stone, and our job was to honor that while bringing them back to life.

The crown of the project was designing and adding a cupola to the Georgian farmhouse. Getting the proportions right on a building with this much history and character is the kind of challenge we live for.

None of it happens without the right people on the ground. A huge thank you to the team at Construction Services Unlimited for their craftsmanship on this one. Working alongside carpenters who genuinely care about the work makes all the difference.

A new client came to us with a clear intention. They didn't want a home that looked out at the island. They wanted a home that belonged to it.

The materials echo what's already there; the texture of the rock, the wind blown trees and the way light moves across the water at different hours of the day. Nothing competes with the setting. Everything responds to it.

The boundary between built and natural doesn't disappear by accident. It takes careful listening to a place — and then the discipline to let that place lead.

This is the work we love most at CK Architects: homes that don't interrupt where they sit, but grow out of it.
