20 July 1774. Nathanael Greene married Catharine "Caty" Littlefield in East Greenwich, Rhode Island in her aunt and uncle's home where she was raised. Caty was 19. Nathanael was nearly 32. Nathanael adored her. Ten days before, he did his duty like a good bridegroom and sent wedding invitations to his friend and Caty's cousin, Sammy Ward, Jr.
"Please to deliver the enclosed Cards to your sisters. On the 20th this instant I expect to be married to Miss Caty Littlefield at your Uncle Greene’s. As a Relative of hers and friend of mine, your company is desired upon the occasion. The company will be small consisting of only a few Choice Spirits. As she is not married at her father’s house she declined giving any an invitation but a few of her nearest relations and most intimate friends. There will be my brothers & their wives, Mr. Varnum & his wife, Christopher & Griffin Greene and their Wives, and who from Block Island I don’t know. Those are all except your family. Believe me to be your sincere friend. Nath Greene"
During the Revolutionary War, she did all in her power to join him at winter cantonments except the first two years he commanded in the South, when he forbade it. They had 5 surviving children and were married 12 years until his death in 1786.
