We are pleased to announce the recipient of our garden of the month award. Aileen Hesel and Allen Totzeck of Greenville. Their stately Victorian home built in 1875, known as the Scott M.Ellis house is listed on the Greene County Historical Society. Since their purchase in 1999 these ambitious gardeners have created an oasis of hidden gardens which include 52 varieties of perennials and 30 varieties of trees and shrubs.
The home is flanked by multiple gardens. The front of the house features large hanging ferns, and beds of many perennials. To the left of the house are various plantings, too many to list. Behind the house you forget you are in the middle of Greenville. The back opens to an oasis of large shade garden of ferns, vinca, European ginger to name a few.
There is a lower garden and an impressive white picket fenced area that includes too many plants to list. Another path opens to a pollinator a garden. Along with this is a large fenced in area of raised beds of several varieties of vegetables and herbs.
The back of the property has a barn bordered with additional plantings. An aqueduct runs through the property with several plants along that.
This truly is a labor of love!
