Most people never check, but ten minutes on a bright day with a flashlight can tell you a lot:
Daylight through the decking means there are actual openings in your roof. Small ones now, but they don't stay small.

Insulation that looks wet or compressed in one spot means moisture is getting in somewhere above it and sitting there.

Dark streaking along the rafters isn't age, it's a water trail that's been active.

None of those things fix themselves, and none of them show up from the ground.

By the time shingles look worn from the street, the breakdown has been happening for a while.

Summers in Upstate South Carolina put asphalt shingles through a cycle of heat expansion and contraction every single day and the first thing to go is the granule layer protecting everything underneath.

Here's the one thing you can check without getting on a ladder: look at the ground around your downspouts after rain. Dark, sand-like granules washing out means your shingles are telling you something.
