A new product is now available: Practical GreenTech Raw Biochar (1 CU FT)

Biochar is a form of charcoal used in agriculture, landscaping, and environmental remediation that is produced through a carbon sequestering process known as pyrolysis, a low-oxygen fire that produces pure carbon predominantly.

Here is quantifiable evidence that no garden or landscape really needs 10-10-10. These results were achieved using only organic fertilizer and soil amendments.

These four samples were representative of soil amendment strategies. The first sample (picture one) was screened topsoil without amendment. The second sample (picture two) was screened topsoil amended with raw biochar. The third sample (picture three) was screened topsoil amended with inoculated biochar. The fourth sample (yep, picture four) was screened topsoil amended with inoculated biochar and screened mulch fines.

Note the improved pH, nutrient content, and increased cation exchange capacity.

Here is one of several studies available that studied the effects of using, carbon sequestering, as a soil amendment and the impact it has on beneficial soil microbes. Healthy plants require healthy soil and microbes; specifically, those that fix ammonia, nitrogen and other nutrients into forms that plants can absorb through their roots. Some microbes actually produce antibiotics that benefit the plants and the microbes due to their mutualistic symbiosis. Using biochar amendments like our 1:1 Inoculated Biochar Worm Casting Blend can increase soil microbe activity 20-200% depending upon initial soil quality and amendment strategy.

Pyrolysis in action. Smokeless, low emission, efficient, and low tech. We use forestry waste and natural tree fall that is readily available in Upstate, South Carolina to produce our for soil amendments.

Biochar sequesters carbon from the atmosphere by locking up the carbon for several thousand years; some research pushes that number to 100,000 years! That means it stays in the soil, where it buffers pH, improves water retention, absorbs and holds nutrients for plants in a bioavailable form, reduces clay compaction, creates healthy environments for helpful aerobic microbes, and increases the cation exchange capacity.

In short, it is a practical solution to combat global warming that makes super soil that requires less fertilizer and watering while improving yields.
