โ€œ Leontopodium nivale, commonly called edelweiss (German: Alpen-EdelweiรŸ) is a mountain flower belonging to the daisy or sunflower family Asteraceae.

The plant prefers rocky limestone places at about 1,800โ€“3,000 metres (5,900โ€“9,800 ft) altitude. It is non-toxic and has been used in traditional medicine as a remedy against abdominal and respiratory diseases. Its leaves and flowers are covered with dense hairs, which appear to protect the plant from cold, aridity, and ultraviolet radiation. It is a scarce, short-lived flower found in remote mountain areas and has been used as a symbol for alpinism, for rugged beauty and purity associated with the Alps and Carpathians, and as a national symbol, especially of Romania, Austria, Bulgaria, Mongolia, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Italy. According to folk tradition, giving this flower to a loved one is a promise of dedication.

The plant's leaves and flowers are covered with white hairs, and appear woolly (tomentose). Flowering stalks of edelweiss can grow to a size of 3โ€“20 centimetres (1โ€“8 in) in the wild, or, up to 40 cm (16 in) in cultivation. Each bloom consists of five to six small yellow clustered spikelet-florets (5 mm, 3โ„16 in) surrounded by fuzzy white "petals" (technically, bracts) in a double-star formation. The flowers bloom between July and September. โ€œ

Once a strong, brave young Hutsul decided to do anything to win the hand and heart of a sorceress. Climbing to the top of the mountain, he spent all his strength, when he saw his beloved, he could not say a word, he just looked at her with admiration. Since he didn't talk about his feelings, the dark forces couldn't do anything to him. As time passed, the sorceress became attached to the young man, giving rise to unusual feelings for her before. Dark forces could not allow this, waiting for the right moment, unexpectedly crept up to Hutsul and threw him off the cliff. Feeling the bitterness of loss, the sorceress cried for the first time in her life. The tear, touching the ground, gave birth to a plant of unusual beauty, and this is how the first Edelweiss flower appeared.

The story about the Edelweiss flower says that a witch lived high in the mountains. She was kind and beautiful, like spring mountains and unattainable, like harsh mountain peaks. Her father, before his death, made a vow that no mortal would be able to get his daughter's hand in marriage, as he considered commoners unworthy of her attention. Many daredevils tried to achieve recognition of the sorceress, but as soon as the young man began to talk about his feelings, dark forces immediately appeared and threw him into the abyss.
