Greenville Camellia Society will be participating at Camellia City Fest on Saturday, September 12, in downtown Greenville. Look for us in front of Newton Oil, where we will be selling camellia plants ceramic mugs with Pride of Greenville camellias depicted, as well as hand-made paper camellia pins. We hope to see you there. Hours are 9 until 2.

Greenville Camellia Society (GCS) President Jan Newton recently entertained members of the Gulf Coast Camellia Society (GCCS) at a luncheon at her home. Meg Charbonnet and Jim Campbell came from Louisiana to attend.

The Greenville Camellia Society recently received a grant from GCCS to complete a garden at the entrance to the LBW Community College.

President Jan Newton is thrilled to receive the funding. “LBW plays a valuable role in Greenville as a leader in education and workforce development, so it is important to GCS to support the college and Dean Peige Josey and beautify its Greenville campus.”

Treasurer Mary Bates appreciates receiving the grant money. “It ensures that we will be able to complete our project as originally designed.”

Greenville Camellia Society (GCS) President Jan Autrey Newton is proud to announce that the Society has received a grant from the Gulf Coast Camellia Society (GCCS). The funds will allow GCS to complete its garden project at the entrance to the LBW Community College.

The Gulf Coast Camellia Society is a regional society under the American Camellia Society. Organized in 1962 for the purpose of extending appreciation and enjoyment of camellias, the Society strives to provide information to its members about all aspects of the care and culture of camellia plants as well as the exhibiting and showing of camellia blooms. The Society also serves as a forum for members to share and exchange information and experiences with other members.

GCS President Newton welcomes the support of the GCCS. “We are so thrilled to receive the grant from GCCS. They recognize the importance of LBW Community College to Butler County and understand the pride GCS takes in contributing to our community.”

One of our favorite people will be featured at the Greenville Artwalk this weekend! Come out and say hello to Miss Betty Anderson, proprietor of the Camden Shoe Shop & Quilt Museum. She is an entrepreneur, a creative artisan, and the keeper of the flame of her family history.

Betty has been a guest speaker at GCS meetings, a vendor at our Alabama Artisans Market, and has attended our Greenville Camellia Show judges' dinner several times. We appreciate Betty's support of our Society and know you will enjoy her presentation!

Congratulations to Greenville Camellia Society Debutante Emilee Myrick on being named Lowndes County's Distinguished Young Woman! GCS wishes Emilee much continued success in the future!

Distinguished Young Women is the oldest national scholarship program for high school girls. DYW empowers young women to reach their full potential by providing scholarship opportunities for college as well as personal development to become confident leaders.

The Beeland Park historical markers were dedicated in a lovely ceremony yesterday! Thank you to everyone who attended including special guests Mayor Jae'Ques Brown, County Commissioner Jesse McWilliams, City Councilman Joseph West, Sheriff David Scruggs, and Rev. John Girdley.

GCS President Jan Autrey Newton summed up her remarks beautifully by saying, “History lives through memory, through storytelling, and places such as this. By dedicating these historical markers, we ensure that future generations will know what happened here, why it mattered, and why it should never be forgotten. May the markers stand for generations as a source of remembrance, education, and inspiration.”

Please join the Greenville Camellia Society this Friday at 10:00 as we dedicate two historical markers on the grounds of Beeland Park.

The markers commemorate the history of Beeland Park and its gardens and highlight the contributions of the Greenville Men's Camellia Society in naming the Camellia as Alabama's state flower.

Come celebrate the rich and unique history which helped shape Greenville as “The Camellia City.” Everyone is welcome to attend!
