Twenty-five years. Same mission. When JDG opened its doors in Greenville in 2001, we believed architecture could do more than shelter — it could restore. Restore well-being. Restore community. Restore our relationship with the places we inhabit. That belief has never wavered. And as we step into our next chapter, we're returning to it with fresh energy and deep gratitude for the Upstate community that has grown alongside us. Here's to the next 25 — together.

We're proud to share one of our most meaningful projects yet — a custom home built on the belief that great design doesn't dominate the landscape, it honors it.

Watch the video to see how restorative design principles and bold architectural vision came together to create something truly special. Every decision — from siting to material selection — was made with one goal in mind: a home that feels like a natural extension of the land it lives on, not an imposition upon it.

This is what happens when clients trust the process and share the vision. Architecture that deepens the bond between dwelling and place, between intention and land.

We're grateful for clients who understand that the best homes don't just stand on a site — they belong to it.

We're incredibly proud to celebrate the completion of Oak Grove at Blake Farm — a stunning new 55+ active adult community now welcoming residents in Wilmington, NC.
From the rooftop lounge and saltwater pool to the golf simulator and firepit courtyard, every detail of this project was designed to honor the way this generation wants to live — actively, beautifully, and on their own terms.
Projects like this don't happen without the right partners. A heartfelt thank you to our visionary client Trask Land Co for trusting us with a concept that truly puts people first, and to C Herman Construction for bringing the craftsmanship and dedication that made it all possible.
Coastal charm. Elegant living. A community earned. We couldn't be more proud of what this team built together.

Happy Earth Day from the JDG team.

Every year, Earth Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on what we build — and why. At Johnston Design Group, restorative design has always been more than a methodology. It is a commitment to buildings that restore well-being, honor natural resources, and contribute something real to the communities around them.

This year, we are returning to a tradition close to our hearts: in honor of our clients, JDG is making a $500 gift to Conestee Nature Preserve right here in Greenville.

Conestee is the kind of place that reminds you why protecting green space matters. Run by a small, dedicated nonprofit team, the Preserve offers trails, environmental education, a nature playscape, and genuine connection to the natural world — for everyone in our community. Their work is funded entirely by charitable giving, and every dollar makes a difference.

We're proud to support them and grateful to the clients who make it possible.

There’s a good piece circulating this week about where downtown Greenville is headed — and it’s worth the read.

Three major projects totaling more than $1.7 billion are advancing at the same time: University Ridge at the northern edge of downtown, the Falls Park Conference District on Falls Street, and Gracie Plaza at 250 North Church — the site that sat empty for 28 years after the Memorial Auditorium came down in 1997.

What strikes us about this moment isn’t the scale, though the scale is real. It’s the simultaneity. These aren’t sequential bets hedged against each other. They’re three parallel commitments to corridors that are ready — because the walkability, the greenways, the public spaces, and the street-level energy that define this city were already here to build on.

Good cities are built in layers. Greenville has been laying them for a long time. This is what the next layer looks like.

The North Gateway development transforms a pivotal intersection where downtown meets community, creating dramatic public open space that activates the 400 block while reinforcing the vital connection between Greenville's central business district and McPherson Park.
This mixed-use development will integrate up to 30,000 square feet of new commercial space that thoughtfully screens a multi-level public parking garage, providing the foundation for approximately 600 apartments above. The terraced Main Street frontage creates dynamic destination retail and restaurant venues with carefully designed outdoor spaces that invite community gathering.
Street-level food-oriented retail activates the sidewalk experience, fostering pedestrian engagement and transforming what was previously the weakest pedestrian connection in the central business district. Through an innovative public-private partnership, this development demonstrates how restorative design can revitalize urban gateways while honoring the community's vision for sustainable growth.
The design celebrates Greenville's character while creating new opportunities for residents, visitors, and businesses to connect with the heart of the city.
