Frank J. LaFata for State Representative 91st District

Frank J. LaFata for State Representative 91st District If you are looking for a change in the 91st District, here it is. Frank Lafata is a regular guy who is frustrated with the current political climate.

A Carpenter who can't sit back. He is running for State Representative in the 91st District. I am a retired union carpenter, proud husband, father, and grandfather running for the 91st State House District, which covers portions of Kent, Ionia, and Montcalm counties. I believe the incumbent, Pat Outman, has lost touch with the people he serves—and I'm ready to work for you. I'm running to protect our jobs, support our families, and stand up for rural communities.

Tomorrow is Labor Day! A day to recognize and celebrate the American workers' contribution to the success and strength of our country.

Peter J. McGuire, known as the "father" of Labor Day, did more than anyone else to convince union activists that a national labor federation was possible. He formed the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. I am proud to say that my union, Northern Midwest Regional Council of Carpenters Local 100, sprang from that early union!

Its first hard fought battle was for an 8-hour day. Even after Congress passed an 8-hour law, it was largely ignored and President Chester A. Arthur refused to enforce it!

It took sit-ins, protests and walk outs to finally get that 8-hour day. We forget how hard those who came before us fought and how much they sacrificed to make working conditions better. Labor Day is a day to remember their contribution and show our appreciation for all the workers who make our lives easier and better.

It's the beginning of Labor Day weekend. Tomorrow the Model "A" and I will be participating in Trufant's Red, White and Blue Jubilee Parade and on Monday I will be walking in Belding's Labor Day Parade with the Ionia County Democratic Party, Stan Opal candidate for MI Senate District 33 and members of Abdul El-Sayed's candidate for US State Senate team.

Did you know the first Labor Day Parade occurred on September 5, 1882? On that date, a large group of workers, organized by the Central Labor Union, marched in New York City to support working people who faced long hours, unsafe conditions and low pay.

I'm up in Pierson canvassing today, but I'll be back in time for the "meet and greet" at 6:30 PM at Lakeside Park in Lakeview. We can talk about what needs to be done to get us out of the economic mess we are in!

I saw where my opponent, Chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, finally got around to spending ONE morning with Greenville Transit and Belding Dial-A-Ride "to get a firsthand look at how public transportation works".

After retiring from building bridges, roads and buildings throughout Michigan, I got a little restless. So, I drove for Grand Rapids Transit for two years. I'm guessing I might have a better understanding of how public transit works than someone who's only spent one morning on it.

Public transportation is extremely important to rural communities. As our population gets older and if gas prices continue to rise, that importance will increase significantly. If elected, it will not take me 5 years to get a firsthand look. I already understand how it works and what we need to make it work in rural communities.

We've got Friend-to-Friend postcards available at the office at 118 S. Franklin Street. Stop in and pick-up a pack (packs of 20). Use them to reach out to friends and family in our District to urge and/or remind them to vote for Frank Lafata on Tuesday, November 3rd. It's a small gesture with a powerful punch. The cards are free, but the 65cent postage stamp (can you believe this cost?) is on you.

I'm working hard to get our message out to the people in Michigan's 91st House District. I'm out canvassing nearly every day, getting to know my District and its people. I would like to talk to every single one of my constituents if I could, but that's not very feasible. So, here's an easy way for you to help me. Simply, share my post/messages on Facebook with your friends to let them know I'm here and working hard for them.

Thanks,
Frank

We've had a fun weekend but now it's time to get back on the road to introduce myself to the people of District 91 and hear their concerns. I'm heading for Stanton tomorrow, but I'd like to share a little incident that happened to me while canvassing, I got rear-ended! Fortunately, no one was injured. The driver that hit me got a flat tire, so I changed her tire while the State Trooper directed traffic around us. And yes, I gave both the person that hit me and the Trooper who responded my campaign literature!

This accident brought up the subject of Michigan's Automobile Insurance rates which are among the highest in the nation. ( I'm pretty sure mine are going to get even higher.)

If elected, I'm going to review these rates and find ways to reduce them. First, I'll evaluate our no-fault system and personal injury protection to determine if they can be reformed or if there are better and cheaper options available. Do we need our minimum liability and property protection minimum limits as high as they
are currently?

If we can reduce the insurance rates, we have a greater chance of getting the 20 - 25% uninsured drivers to be able to afford insurance which would help to bring the cost down even further.
