We’re being pretty intentional about this next hire. I’m not just looking for another hand. I’m looking for someone who’s interested in growing with us.

Someone who wants to do their best, is open to coaching to become their best, and is committed to helping us be our best.

I’d love to find somebody who’s excited to learn a trade and turn it into a career. We can teach skills. What I’m really hoping to find is someone who cares about quality, takes pride in their work, enjoys serving clients, works well with a solid team, and wants to keep getting better.

What I really hope to find…

Someone who sticks around long enough that one day they’re the one helping train the next new guy.

Sometimes custom building isn’t about making something extravagant.

Sometimes custom building means listening, understanding the need, respecting the budget, and creating the right solution.

Wesley United Methodist Church in Greenville came to Cullen Custom Construction needing a new bus barn solution. They had specific goals, a specific budget, and they wanted a building that looked like it belonged on their campus, not something that was just dropped onto the property.

Challenge accepted.

We worked with their team to design and build a functional space while matching the exterior color palette of the existing church facilities.

We still have a few finishing touches ahead, including the driveway and electrical, but we couldn’t wait to share the progress.

From an empty piece of ground to a building that will serve this church and community for years to come.

If you’ve been following along… here’s a look at the finished bunk beds. 🔨

This project was a fun one — a little outside our normal kitchen, bath, and custom home work — but sometimes a unique project comes along that’s worth saying yes to.

And yes… if you saw our earlier post, this is the same project where we had one of “those days.” We made a mistake, owned it, came up with a solution, and made it right.

Because craftsmanship isn’t about never making a mistake — it’s about how you handle it when something doesn’t go according to plan.

The end result? Two custom built-in bunk beds, designed to fit the space, built to last, and ready for lots of memories to be made.

You ever have one of those days?

A few weeks ago, a client asked us to build these custom bunk beds. Things were moving along great. We were making good progress, and honestly, I was pretty proud of how they were turning out.

Then I realized something.

I had made a mistake.

The beds were built 5 inches too short.

Nobody to blame but me. Somewhere between the plans and our conversations about mattress sizes, I failed to double-check a measurement that I should have verified.

That phone call to the client wasn’t much fun.

But here’s the thing: when you mess up, you’ve got two choices. You can make excuses, or you can make it right.

So that’s exactly what we did.

Yesterday we modified the beds, corrected the dimensions, and got everything back where it should have been. It cost us a day on the schedule and some extra labor, but the client is getting the project they hired us to build.

My grandfather, who I never even had the chance to meet, left behind a saying that somehow still rattles around in my head:

“If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.”

That’s not always the easiest path, but it’s the only one that makes sense to me.

Construction isn’t about never making mistakes. It’s about taking responsibility when you do.

Now back to building.

This one is a little outside our normal world… and honestly we almost said no.

A client here in Greenville wanted two fully custom built-in bunk bed systems for their lake cabin after a major redesign/addition to the space.
Truth is, permanent built-in furniture like this isn’t really where Cullen Custom Construction makes its living. We do a lot more kitchens, bathrooms, remodels, and new construction.

But neither we nor the client could find somebody willing to really take this project on the right way.
So… we decided to figure it out.

This picture is about halfway through framing, and it’s turning into one of the coolest projects we’ve done in a while. Every inch of this cabin matters, and these bunks are being built specifically for this family and this space.

Projects like this may not make us rich. But,honestly we’re having a blast building it.
