Six years in business and apparently I’m having my Rodney Dangerfield moment: “I don’t get no respect!”. 😉

I stopped by one of our lenders to drop off some documents. This company has been incredibly good to AFineLine Striping Services, and I genuinely credit their willingness to provide financing with helping us navigate some very lean seasons. I am grateful for the relationship.

While I was there, a gentleman who has seen me many times asked:

“So, do you usually work out of your husband’s office?”

Bless his heart. 😂

For context, in six years of doing business with this company, they have never once spoken to my husband.

My husband has absolutely supported this business and has been actively involved at different times. In fact, I gifted him a small ownership interest because I valued that commitment and support.

But AFineLine is my company.

And I have to admit, when I heard the question, my heart sank a little.

Not because I believe there was any ill intent behind it. I don't.

It sank because after six years of working incredibly hard to build credibility in an industry where credibility doesn't come easily, there are still moments when I realize that someone can look at me and automatically assume there must be a man somewhere who is really running things.

Apparently, I have been working out of my husband's imaginary office this whole time. I would like to know where it is because I hope it has better snacks. 😂

Beneath the humor is something worth talking about.

Sometimes the assumptions we make about business owners are so deeply ingrained that we don't even realize we're making them. And sometimes a seemingly innocent question reminds someone else just how hard they have worked to be seen as the person actually sitting in the chair.

So, just for the record:

Six years in.

Still learning.

Still building.

Still making mistakes.

Still signing the checks.

Still carrying the risk.

Still showing up.

And yes…still the owner.

Now, if somebody can point me toward my husband's office, I have a few invoices I'd like to leave on his desk. 😂

🎉Happy Birthday AFineLine!!🎉

They say building a business is a lot like having a baby and after these last six years, I believe it.

Every baby is different. Some come into the world happy and easy. Some have colic and keep you up all night. 😩

-Some start walking at 9 months. Others take their sweet time.

-Some listen. Some are hard-headed.

-Some hit every milestone right on schedule, and others make you wonder if you’re doing any of this right.

But you love them. You nurture them. You worry about them. You sacrifice for them. And somehow, you keep showing up.

And if I’m being transparent, year six finds us in a hard season. We’re learning how to grow but not grow too fast that we can’t sustain.

-We’re figuring out how to manage cash flow when 60- and 90-day payments are becoming the norm.

-We’re working to find reliable people who care about the quality of their work and our reputation as much as we do.

-We’re learning when to say yes, when to say no, and when an opportunity that looks like growth really isn’t.

There are days when I look at this “baby” and think, You should be further along by now. Then I remember: every baby develops differently. And so does every business.

Six years ago, we started this journey. We’ve made mistakes. We’ve taken some hits. We’ve celebrated wins. We’ve learned some expensive lessons. We’ve grown, stumbled, adjusted and kept going. We are not where I thought we would be at six. We are not where we need to be.

But we are still here.

Still learning.

Still serving.

Still growing.

Still pressing forward.

So today, I’m not just celebrating where AFineLine has arrived. I’m celebrating that we didn’t quit on the way here.

Never stop learning.

Today marks the beginning of my journey through the Construction Management Diploma Program at NC State University.

After spending nearly three decades in banking and now leading AFineLine Striping Services full-time, I realized that experience alone isn’t enough. I want to continue growing, not just as a business owner, but as a construction professional who can better serve clients, lead projects, and create safer, higher-quality infrastructure.

I’m incredibly grateful to NCDOT for investing in small businesses through this scholarship opportunity.

Here’s to stretching, learning, and proving that it’s never too late to earn another seat in the classroom.

Speed on the track. Safety in the parking lot. 🏁

Today’s site visit took me somewhere pretty exciting!!!! I was behind the scenes of company that builds race cars!!

While the cars are built for speed, I couldn’t help but notice that safety for them starts long before anyone gets behind the wheel. It begins in their parking lot, with clear pavement markings, pedestrian walkways, ADA spaces, and proper signage. Safety is serious business on and off the track.

At AFineLine Striping Services, we believe first impressions and safety go hand in hand.

No matter the industry, lines save lives.

Today I got the news that we didn't win a project I really wanted.

It HURTS!! I invested the time, prepared a thoughtful proposal, and I could clearly see my team doing the work.

There was a moment when I was tempted to lower our price just to win the job. But I also know what it takes to deliver quality work: skilled people, quality materials, proper insurance, reliable equipment, and the overhead required to do things the right way.

I had to remind myself that winning a project at a price that doesn't support those things isn't really winning.

The client chose the lower bid, and I respect that decision. In today's market, everyone is watching costs closely. I genuinely wish them success with the project.

As for me, I'll keep focusing on the opportunities that value quality, professionalism, and long-term results over the lowest number on a spreadsheet.

Onward.

Growth doesn’t happen overnight, and it definitely doesn’t happen without failure.

What I know for sure is this: we are better today than we were 5 years ago. Stronger systems. Smarter decisions. Thicker skin.

Huge shoutout to Stephanie Byson for leading an incredible masterclass around How to Get a Return on Failure by John Maxwell. It’s helped reshape the way I think about failure, not as something to fear, but something to learn from.
