Today I got the news that we didn't win a project I really wanted.

It HURTS!! I invested the time, prepared a thoughtful proposal, and I could clearly see my team doing the work.

There was a moment when I was tempted to lower our price just to win the job. But I also know what it takes to deliver quality work: skilled people, quality materials, proper insurance, reliable equipment, and the overhead required to do things the right way.

I had to remind myself that winning a project at a price that doesn't support those things isn't really winning.

The client chose the lower bid, and I respect that decision. In today's market, everyone is watching costs closely. I genuinely wish them success with the project.

As for me, I'll keep focusing on the opportunities that value quality, professionalism, and long-term results over the lowest number on a spreadsheet.

Onward.

Growth doesn’t happen overnight, and it definitely doesn’t happen without failure.

What I know for sure is this: we are better today than we were 5 years ago. Stronger systems. Smarter decisions. Thicker skin.

Huge shoutout to Stephanie Byson for leading an incredible masterclass around How to Get a Return on Failure by John Maxwell. It’s helped reshape the way I think about failure, not as something to fear, but something to learn from.

Still building. Still learning. Still growing.

Proud moment for A Fine Line Striping.
We just inked a Service Contract (for the 3yrs) with the City of Chapel Hill.
Grateful for the opportunity to serve another North Carolina Municipality with safe, high-quality pavement solutions.
And yes… this Duke fan will gladly cross into Chapel Hill for good work. 😉
