Meeting fire code is essential. But for some facilities, the minimum requirement may not address every real-world life safety challenge.

When Green Bay Converting planned a new manufacturing facility, employee notification was a priority — including ensuring alarms could effectively reach employees throughout a large industrial environment.

The resulting approach incorporated voice notifications, message boards, strobes and strategically placed emergency buttons to provide multiple ways to communicate during fire, weather and other emergencies.

It's a great example of why life safety system design should consider how people actually work within a facility, not just the minimum requirements on paper.

Not every fire alarm signal means the same thing.

Understanding the difference between Supervisory, Trouble and Alarm signals can help facility teams respond appropriately and keep fire protection systems operating as intended.

🔹 Supervisory: Indicates a condition within the fire protection system that needs attention, such as a valve change or low air pressure.
🔹 Trouble: Signals a system problem, such as a power loss, wiring issue or low backup battery.
🔹 Alarm: Indicates a potential fire event triggered by devices such as smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations or water flow switches.

Knowing what each signal means — and addressing it promptly — is an important part of maintaining a reliable life safety system.
