Update on the Cliff House

Since our last post, we have installed a few of the panoramic floor to ceiling windows on the south side of the house! (Supplied by Zuern Building Products) But with all of the rain lately, we’ve had to pull off site for a short while.

Then, last week our men started prepping for our framing crew to come back and start on the decks & install more windows.

Ike, Carlos, Isaac, Eli, Andy J, Andy B, and Curt have been working together on this massive behemoth of a deck, look at how expansive it is! 😍

Window install on the White Pillars Museum!

Today, Nick Backhaus from Heritage Hill State Park is installing the windows on the front of the building. He is using sash cords (braided cotton rope) to connect the sash weights (hidden in the wall cavity) through the pulleys to the window, creating a balance system that allows the window to move up and down or stay open. This was the standard window system from the late 17th century all the way till the 1950’s.

Our finish carpenters Jake & Stevie have also finished installing all the cedar shake we had stained from our previous post onto the roof. Picture attached! 😍

A huge shout out to our guy Ethan, who took a sample of the original flooring and recreated it throughout the whole floor, it’s an art at its finest and kudos to him! Thank you to Beam & Board for the beautiful, reclaimed product.

Also pictured is Andy, who has been working closely with Schuh’s painters to finish the textured painting on the walls! 😊

When the decision was made to preserve the pendant from the front of the building, Chris Renier and Pat were in agreement to save the piece. When we disassembled the building, we reinstalled it onto the back side. It took a team of Pat, Andy, and others to restore it!

We are so proud of the collaborate effort put forth by those around us who truly care about preserving these pieces of history, and by those who keep an open mind to our crazy ideas about restoration work.

Pat was on the board, and a past president of Heritage Hill State Park, so bringing them into this project was an easy thought, thank you to them & Schuh Construction for this team effort!

We found these 1900’s prohibition era memorabilia stashed in the rafters of the Fancy B Bed & Breakfast as we were building their new exterior staircase to the third floor!

A “MAKE THE MAP ALL WHITE” flier referring to dry states as white states, and wet states as black states, regarding prohibition laws

A 1910 antique baseball scorecard with names and abbreviations for the positions each player played

A Lincoln Lee Legion Temperance Service (a youth branch of the Anti-Saloon League) card that an individual would earn if they took the pledge of abstinence. You would typically see these handed out by Sunday School services and churches

A Lincoln- Lee Legion Certificate that shows portraits of Abraham Lincoln & Robert E Lee

This is what we today call a Jigsaw Puzzle.

During the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, companies would send these out as advertising. In this case these pieces were sent out for Senours Floor Paint, which later became Martin – Senour Paint Company, established in Chicago in 1884.

To complete the puzzle, you would cut out the pieces on the dotted line, put them together / on top of each other, and layer it with photo paste.

Amazing that over 100 years ago this was hidden, hoping someone like us would find it, and we did!

It’s really neat some of the things we find in old homes. Saving & finding pieces of history is what we love to see. 😊

Other builders told our client to demolish her family home; that’s the easy route.

They even went as far as to draw a new house on top & two masonry fireplaces that would cost over 100k in today’s world were about to be torn down.

She removed one of her stones from her fireplace in remembrance of her family’s home. Then she contacted us.

This is where the “Drury Difference” comes in. Our family has been remodeling houses since my dad bought his first home way back when. It amazes us how prevalent throw away culture is - isn’t it worth at least trying to save?

We don’t just remodel houses; we save family home and memories.

Stay tuned for updates on this “Charlie Brown House” as we start on the siding and interior finishing of this project! 😊

We have been honored to work on this historic Joannes home for the last 12 years. Remodeling, repairing, and updating this beautiful house.

The current owners who are selling this home have been nothing but first class, they understood that their job was to steward this home and take care of it.

Through our history of doing historic buildings, we make suggestions on how to do things right, and they listened. Working together with them is one of our biggest gratitude's in our 27 years of building.

Again, we are beyond honored to have left our mark on such an important house in history. 🏘️
