This massive oak tree stood tall for an estimated 200 years, but unfortunately, its time had come.

After two centuries of growth, the tree had died and needed to be removed before it became a serious safety hazard.

We get asked this a lot: what is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding cuts the stump below grade and turns it into mulch, leaving the roots in place. Removal pulls the entire stump and root ball out of the ground.

The right choice depends on what comes next. If you are building or grading, full extraction is the cleaner option. If you are replanting or just clearing access, grinding gets the job done without disturbing the surrounding soil.

Land clearing in Northeast Wisconsin runs on a tight seasonal schedule. Once freeze-thaw cycles set in, grading equipment struggles to compact fill properly, stumps become nearly impossible to extract, and debris hauling routes can get cut off by snow and frozen ground.

The window to get everything done, brush cleared, trees removed, stumps pulled, and final grading completed, runs from late summer through fall. Missing it means pushing construction timelines all the way to spring.

A few things worth knowing before you plan a clearing project:
- Stump extraction before frost prevents spring settling and hidden obstacles
- Final grading needs to happen after all debris is removed, not around it
- Proper slope calculation protects against spring drainage problems
