This is one of the best rewards for all that work earlier in the season! The zinnias we started from seed are finally bursting with color, and now I get to bring armfuls of them inside.

When I’m cutting zinnias for a bouquet, I like to keep a container of water right beside me, so every stem starts hydrating the moment it’s cut. By the time I head inside, my flowers are ready for their vase!

A little care for your flowers, a little care for your body, and a beautiful reminder to enjoy everything you’ve grown—Happy cutting! 🌿🌸

When a storm takes down a tree, it reveals a beautiful opportunity to create around a part of the tree that we never get to see: Its stump. Instead of hauling every root away, consider creating a stumpery. Over time, ferns, mosses, woodland plants, and fungi transform old roots into one of the most magical corners of the garden.

Preserve your body while preserving the stump, and always utilize machinery when trying to move heavy stumps.

Some of my favorite places in the landscape began with something that looked like a loss. Nature has a beautiful way of starting over. 🌿

One of my favorite things about gardening is that it naturally gives us different opportunities to keep our bodies limber. This half-kneeling position is a wonderful stretch for the front of the hips after spending time digging, planting, or weeding.

Need a little more? Rest your back foot on a pot and you’ll feel an even deeper stretch.

This is a wonderful stretch to help reset your body in the garden; just remember to switch sides and give both hips a little love, and stay GardenFit. 🌿

Most people try to force a shovel through the soil. Instead, let the shovel do what it was designed to do: start with the blade straight down, cutting cleanly around the planting hole—almost like slicing a chocolate cake—and by the time you’re ready to lift the soil out, it’s already loose and much easier to work with.

A little technique saves a lot of effort. 🌿

Before I head into the garden, I like to make one trip. That means loading my cart with everything I might need:

✔️ Digging tools
✔️ Hand tools
✔️ Loppers
✔️ Trugs
✔️ Tarp

There’s nothing more frustrating than walking all the way back to the shed because you forgot one tool. A little preparation goes a long way toward staying GardenFit—and enjoying your time in the garden. 🌿

Your hands are an invaluable resource in the garden, and it’s important to protect them from sharp stones, thorns, poison ivy, and sticky sap. Even soft-looking plants can surprise you with irritation.

A good pair of gloves helps protect your skin so your hands are ready for tomorrow’s gardening, too.

GardenFit is about taking care of the body that takes care of the garden. 🌿

Heavy things don’t have to feel heavy!

The trick isn’t stronger shoulders, but better alignment: Let your arms hang naturally and allow the weight to stack over your bones instead of lifting your shoulders toward your ears. It’s a simple adjustment that makes carrying watering cans, buckets, and harvest baskets feel much easier.

Work with your body, not against it. 🌿

Harvest season is exciting, but don’t forget your form: Keep one foot in the direction you’re bending, hinge from the hips, and lower yourself into a squat to reach the base of the plant more easily.

Years ago, I used to move heavy pots around trying to decide where everything should go. Then I discovered flags.

Now I simply color-code them by plant, place them where I think each perennial belongs, and live with the design for a little while before I dig a single hole.

It saves time, it saves lifting, and it gives me the chance to see the garden with fresh eyes (one of my favorite GardenFit habits!) 🌿

People often ask what I always carry with me in the garden, and the answer is pretty simple:

✂️ Clippers
🌱 Hori hori
🔪 Sharpener
🧤 Gloves
💧 Water

Having the right tools within reach means fewer trips back to the shed and more time enjoying the garden. A prepared gardener is a happier gardener. 🌿
