A Different Kind of Logo 🔥🌲

We wanted something a little more creative than just slapping a printed decal on the truck doors — so we brought in local talent instead.

Huge thank you to Ranee Richards, owner and artist behind Gemini Pyrography, for hand wood-burning the Black Fern Tree Service logo! The best part? It's burned into wood that came straight from one of our own job sites — so it's as much a part of our story as it is a piece of art.

We love supporting local artists and finding ways to do things our own way. Swipe through to see Ranee's work in progress and the finished product on the truck! 🔥🪵
If you're in need of custom pyrography work, go check out Gemini Pyrography — her talent speaks for itself!

Meet the Owner Behind Black Fern Tree Service:

Brooks Cannon has spent over a decade climbing, studying, and caring for trees across Southern Maine — and that experience shows in everything he does.

Brooks got his start running Southern Maine Stump Grinding, and spent years subcontracting as a climber for tree companies throughout the region before launching Black Fern Tree Service in 2022. Today he's a Certified Arborist through both the State of Maine and the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

What sets Brooks apart? He doesn't just remove trees — he treats them. If a tree has a real shot at recovering, removal is the last resort, not the first. He'll walk you through every option to restore your tree's health before anything else.

Born and raised in South Portland, Brooks now calls Gray home and proudly serves all of Southern Maine.

When he's not up in the canopy, you'll find him whitewater kayaking, camping, or at one of Portland's many concerts — and this December, he and his wife are getting ready for their biggest adventure yet: welcoming their first child, a baby girl!

Have a tree you're worried about? Send us a message or give us a call for a free health assessment — let's see what we can save before we talk removal.

Tight Spaces. No Room for Error.

Tree removal isn't always as simple as cutting a tree down. Many of the trees we work on are surrounded by homes, sheds, fences, gardens, and other valuable property, especially in some of the more populated areas in Southern Maine.

In these situations, every cut and removal is carefully planned. When hiring a tree company, make sure you're choosing a properly insured and qualified arborist. Technical removals require skill, precision, and a commitment to safety.

At Black Fern Tree Service, we take pride in tackling the challenging jobs and protecting what matters most—your property.

Did You Know? The Tree We Remove Today Could Help Your Garden Thrive Tomorrow! ♻️🌳

When we remove or prune trees, the wood chips created during the process don't have to go to waste. In fact, they make some of the best natural mulch you can use around your property!

Benefits of wood chip mulch include:

✅ Helps retain soil moisture during dry periods
✅ Suppresses weeds naturally
✅ Reduces soil erosion
✅ Moderates soil temperatures
✅ Slowly adds organic matter back into the soil
✅ Gives garden beds and walking paths a clean, natural appearance

If we're working on your property, we're happy to leave the wood chips behind for your landscaping projects. Many of our customers use them around trees, shrubs, flower beds, vegetable gardens, and woodland trails.

Don't need the chips? No problem! We strive to keep tree material out of landfills whenever possible. That's why we repurpose most of our wood chips through ChipDrop, connecting local gardeners, homesteaders, and homeowners with free mulch while giving new life to material that would otherwise be discarded.

It's just one more way we're committed to responsible tree care and making the most of every tree we work with.

Interested in a load of fresh wood chips? Find us on ChipDrop or ask about keeping the chips from your next tree service project!

🌿 From tree to mulch—nothing goes to waste.
