Is your generator actually ready?

Around here, it's usually not a question of if the power will go out this winter... it's how long it'll be out when it does, right?

And the worst time to find out your generator isn't working?

When the power is already off. 🫤

Before storm season really gets going, take a few minutes to make sure your backup power system is ready:

🔧 Stay on top of maintenance.Just like your car, generators need regular service. Oil, filters, batteries and other components need to be checked and replaced over time.

⚡ Make sure it's testing regularly. Most standby generators run an automatic exercise cycle. If you haven't heard yours kick on in a while, don't just assume everything is good to go.

🔥 Check your propane. A lot of homes in Nevada and Placer Counties rely on propane, and an extended outage can use more fuel than you might expect. Heading into winter with a full tank is always a good idea.

🏠 Don't forget the transfer switch. Your automatic transfer switch is what detects the outage and tells your generator it's time to take over. The generator itself can be perfectly fine, but if there's an issue somewhere else in the system, you may still be sitting in the dark.

A generator that worked perfectly last winter isn't guaranteed to be ready this winter. A little preparation now is a whole lot easier than troubleshooting in the dark, in the rain, when half the neighborhood is already without power. 😬

Myth: "If an outlet works, it must be safe."

Not necessarily.

An outlet can still power your lamp, TV or phone charger while there are issues happening behind the wall that you can't see.

Things like:

🔌 Loose connections
🔌 Worn or aging outlets
🔌 Improper grounding
🔌 Older wiring
🔌 Signs of overheating or damage

This is especially important around Nevada and Placer Counties, where we work on plenty of older homes that have been updated and added onto over the years. Just because everything *turns on* doesn't necessarily mean everything behind the outlet is up to date or working the way it should.

A few things you **shouldn't ignore** are outlets that feel warm, buzzing or crackling sounds, discoloration, plugs that fit loosely, flickering lights, or breakers that seem to trip regularly.

Your electrical system usually gives you clues when something isn't quite right.

If you're noticing any of these around your home, it's worth having a licensed electrician take a look.

Because when it comes to electrical, **"it still works" and "it's safe" aren't always the same thing.**

The 1849 Brewing Co. expansion is underway, and it’s pretty cool to see so many familiar local companies coming together to make it happen.

Our Precision Electric crew is handling the electrical side while working alongside other great local contractors, including Craig Johnson Plumbing and Behr Heating & Air.
