Maintenance Minute: A Small Clog Can Become a Winter Problem

It doesn’t take a gutter packed full of leaves to cause a problem.

Sometimes a single leaf, stick, or small piece of debris catches near a downspout. Water pushes more debris toward that same spot, the blockage grows, and eventually water can no longer drain properly.

Then freezing temperatures arrive.

When trapped water freezes, it expands. If that happens inside a clogged downspout or gutter, that expansion can put additional pressure on seams, elbows, fasteners, and other parts of the drainage system.

That’s why gutter maintenance isn’t only about removing big piles of leaves. Keeping the entire drainage path clear—including the downspouts—helps water get off the roof and away from your home before freezing weather arrives.

A small blockage is much easier to deal with than the damage it can contribute to later.

The difference here is about as clear as it gets.
One side is still covered in thick moss growth. The other side has had that buildup physically removed, revealing the shingles that were underneath the entire time.
And this is only one section of the roof.

When moss is allowed to keep growing year after year, it can spread across the shingles, hold moisture, and make it difficult to even see the condition of the roof underneath.

A lot of people can pressure wash. The difference is what happens when the first pass isn’t enough.

🔧 Maintenance Minute: You Never Know What’s in Your Gutters

When we think about clogged gutters, leaves, pine needles, and roof debris are usually the first things that come to mind.

But sometimes it’s something you’d never expect.

On one job, I found a piece of broken glass lodged in a downspout. We believe it came from a window that had broken months earlier. It sat there without causing an obvious issue—until the rain came and the downspout needed to handle more water.

On another job, I pulled an old firework out of a gutter. The homeowner had no idea it was up there and was just as surprised as I was to find it.

That’s one of the reasons routine gutter maintenance matters. You can see that the outside of a gutter looks fine from the ground, but you don't necessarily know what's sitting inside it or working its way toward a downspout.

Leaves and debris are predictable. Glass, fireworks, toys, roofing material, and other unexpected objects aren't.

Regularly checking and cleaning your gutters gives you a chance to catch the weird stuff before the next heavy rain finds it for you.

As we head into the rainy months, outdoor surfaces like stairs, sidewalks, and driveways are worth keeping an eye on.

Moss thrives in moist conditions, and here in western Oregon, its growth typically picks up with the fall rains and continues through the wetter months. That means a surface that stayed relatively clean through the dry summer can start developing significantly more growth once moisture sticks around.

On stairs and other walking surfaces, that growth isn't just cosmetic. Moss combined with wet conditions can create a slipping hazard—especially in areas that stay shaded and damp.

Cleaning that buildup before the rainy season gets into full swing gives you a clean starting point and helps keep your walkways, stairs, and other concrete surfaces safer going into the wet months.

Moss can be a lot like blackberry bushes — a small problem can turn into a big one faster than you might expect.

Here in Southern Oregon, we know what happens when blackberries are left unchecked. They spread, establish themselves, and become much harder to deal with once they've taken over.

Roof moss can behave similarly. Moisture, shade, and debris create favorable conditions for moss to establish and continue growing. Given enough time, scattered patches can develop into heavy growth across large portions of a roof.

And just like blackberries, the process you use to remove it matters.

Simply killing moss doesn't remove the material from the roof, and using excessive pressure can damage asphalt shingles by removing their protective granules. A proper approach involves physically removing the bulk of the moss without damaging the roofing material, cleaning away the remaining debris, and using an appropriate treatment to help control regrowth.

The longer moss is allowed to establish, the more work it can take to bring the roof back under control. Catching it early and keeping up with maintenance is much easier than waiting until you have a carpet of it.

The goal isn't just getting the moss off. It's removing it without damaging the roof underneath.

🌿 Not Every Moss-Covered Roof Gets Cleaned the Same Way

When it comes to roof moss removal, there isn't just one method we use for every roof.

At Perfect Pressure, we offer both broom-and-stick moss removal and soft washing, and each approaches the problem differently.

🧹 Broom & Stick: We physically remove the bulk of the moss with a broom, then go back with a stick for the moss tucked into areas the broom can't reach. Once the physical removal is finished, the roof is cleaned up and treated to address the remaining growth.

💧 Soft Washing: Instead of physically removing all of the growth first, a soft wash uses a cleaning solution applied at low pressure to kill the moss and other organic growth. The dead growth doesn't necessarily disappear immediately — some remaining material can gradually weather away afterward.

That's an important difference homeowners should understand: soft washing isn't simply pressure washing a roof. The cleaning comes primarily from the treatment rather than high water pressure.

Both methods have their place, and we offer both depending on the roof and the approach that makes sense for the job.

Good roof cleaning isn't about forcing every roof into the same process. It's about understanding the options and choosing the appropriate method for the situation. 🏠

A little moss growing on a roof might not seem like something that needs much attention.

But give it enough time, and it can become more than just a cosmetic issue.

On asphalt roofs, moss can grow around and underneath shingles. As it holds moisture and grows, it can lift shingles and create opportunities for water to reach the layers underneath. Moss can also contribute to the loss of the protective granules on asphalt shingles — the same granules that help protect the asphalt from UV exposure. 🏠

That's why removing established moss is part of protecting the roof, not just improving how it looks.

In this part of our broom-and-stick moss removal process, we're using the broom to physically remove the bulk of the established moss. After that comes a more detailed pass to remove what the broom couldn't reach, followed by cleanup and treatment.

And roof problems aren't cheap.

Current 2026 estimates put a complete shingle roof replacement at roughly $7,500–$24,000, with an average around $10,500. Actual costs vary depending on the roof, but it puts routine roof maintenance into perspective.

🔧 MAINTENANCE MINUTE #1: Don’t Wait for an Overflowing Gutter

One of the easiest gutter problems to spot is water pouring over the side during a rainstorm.

But by that point, the gutter is already telling you there's a problem.

🍂 Leaves and debris can slowly accumulate until there's less and less room for water to move through the gutter. Eventually, enough buildup can restrict the path to the downspout and cause water to back up or overflow.

That's why gutter maintenance is better done before you see the symptoms.

You don't need to wait for water to start pouring over the edge to check your gutters. Keeping them clear gives rainwater an unobstructed path toward the downspouts when the next storm arrives. 🌧️

And sometimes there's a lot more sitting in a gutter than you'd ever be able to see from the ground.
