FAQ Friday: What is creosote? 🔥
Creosote is a dark, sticky residue that can build up inside a chimney when wood is burned. As smoke rises and cools, that residue can stick to the chimney walls — and over time, too much buildup can become a fire hazard.
Stage 1: Flaky, dry soot-like deposits; easiest to remove
Stage 2: Sticky, tar-like or crusty deposits; harder to remove
Stage 3: Hard, shiny, glazed deposits; extremely difficult to remove and highly combustible
Regular chimney cleanings help remove creosote and keep your fireplace ready.
