Jim Smith Contracting Jim Smith Contracting is based in Grand Rivers, Kentucky. We focus on highway contracting and bridge

Jim Smith Contracting started in 1959 performing small earthwork projects such as clearing, light excavating and digging farm ponds for local land owners. The construction of Barkley Dam allowed Smith to venture into heavy construction, mainly performing grade and drain work. Through the 1960's and early 1970's, Jim Smith Contracting continued to grow and perform highway grade and drain projects. In the early 1970's,
the company expanded into the production and placement of asphalt for road construction and commercial construction projects. During this
time, the company also ventured into coal mining. This became a key part of our company's activities for more than a decade. By 1987,
Smith was operating one of the most successful strip mining operations in the USA . The 1980's and 1990's saw other successful ventures at Jim Smith Contracting. These included owning and operating a railroad, railroad shops,
fuel and oil distribution, and a large hotel and convention center. Today, Jim Smith Contracting is focused on highway construction, with primary interest in grade and drain work as well as asphalt paving.
