The chimney effect shown. The top of the plastic is pressurized and the bottom there is a vacuum. The greater the differential in temperature the greater the effect.

Here is a great visualization of what happens in your home each winter that makes it too dry, drafty, uncomfortable, and inefficient:
Cold, dry air is drawn in at the lowest level, then as it is heated and moistened, it exits out the top. Just like a chimney.
See how the plastic is tight to the scaffolding on the bottom, yet is billowing out at the top? That is due to air leakage and driven by temperature differential. The colder it gets, the worse the problem.
