Three Topcon SLAM scanners, three different jobs. The spec sheets won’t tell you which one you need, so here’s the short version.

CR-S2 is the lightest at 2.87 lbs, one-handed, 200,000 points per second out to 230 feet. It’s built for tight spaces. Basements, mechanical rooms, parking structures, interior progress monitoring. The places where the GPS-dependent tools quit.

CR-S1 steps up to 320,000 points per second and 394 feet, with three 12MP panoramic cameras for better colorized data. At 4.85 lbs it’s still a one-hand carry, and it mounts to a backpack or pole when you want it. Best for large open sites, infrastructure work, and topo.

CR-M1 is the continuous-capture option. 640,000 points per second, 394 feet, full 360 by 360 coverage, mounted to a backpack, pole, or vehicle. Built for multi-floor buildings, urban mapping, and covering a lot of ground in one pass.

All three track position through SLAM, which means they keep working underground and indoors where satellite signal doesn’t reach.

The Topcon CR-S2 captures 200,000 points per second while you walk, and builds a colorized point cloud in real time. No tripod, no setups, no second person.

The part that matters for most jobs: SLAM positioning means it doesn't need satellite signal. Interiors, basements, mechanical rooms, parking structures. It keeps tracking where the GPS-dependent tools quit.

A tripod scanner sees what it can see from where you set it. Then you move it and do it again.

The Topcon CR-M1 skips all of that. Put it on a backpack or a pole, walk the site, and it builds a colorized 360º point cloud while you move. 640,000 points per second out to 394 feet.

It works indoors, underground, and through dense cover, which means multi-floor buildings and tight spaces stop being a two-day problem.

The software is not the hard part. It's usually the thing guys are most worried about and the thing they stop thinking about by lunch.

Most people are trained on a total station in two to four hours. That includes people who have never touched one before.

After that it's just getting your points into the tablet. PDF, CAD file, or manual input. Lock in your control on site, tap the point you want, and the total station walks you right to it.

"Can it scan outdoors, or only inside?"

We get this one constantly. The answer is both. Exterior facades and site conditions come through just as well as interior spaces.

The only thing worth planning around is direct sun and reflective surfaces like glass. Timing and angle matter. Outdoor scanning isn't a workaround, it's something the scanner is built for.

The expensive part of a bad layout isn't the layout.

It's the re-pour. It's the week you lose. It's the profit you already spent on the job.
