Late last month, we welcomed Ethan Coverstone to the team!

Ethan began his career in Los Angeles, where he immersed himself in beach-side California modernism and the area’s art and music scene. After spending 10 years on the west coast, he relocated to Grand Rapids in 2023.

Ethan believes the key to great design is prioritizing the experience of the people inhabiting well-crafted space. He is inspired by Yoshio Taniguchi’s words: “architecture is basically a container of something. I hope they will enjoy not so much the teacup, but the tea.” He was drawn to MMA’s attention to detail and rigorous application of design-thinking that is evident at all scales.

Last month, our MMA summer intern Grant and Director of Project Operations Matthew Schulte went on a tour of artist and sculptor Zan Knecht's studio. Zan has created a corten steel sculpture to commemorate the Montcalm Community College student housing project. The piece is a collaborative gift to MCC from Construction Simplified, MMA, Progressive Companies, Rowland Excavating, J&M Construction, Michigan Masonry, Seaman’s Mechanical, and Cannon Concrete.

The sculpture was unveiled last week during student welcome week.

As the 2026-2027 school year commences, Montcalm Community College is welcoming its first round of students living on campus at their new Carbonelli Villas designed to accommodate up to 84 full-time students. The housing is designed as a hybrid style of living that blends the best aspects of both traditional dorms and apartments. Each unit houses 6–8 students in shared bedrooms with communal living, dining, study, bath, and laundry amenities. This approach is efficient yet comfortable, fostering a strong sense of community while also providing privacy and personal space.

Vervint was recently featured on Office Snapshots.

MMA worked with Vervint to reimagine their offices in Grand Rapids, Michigan, transforming a historic manufacturing plant into a new headquarters that fosters team cohesion and creativity through innovative space planning and natural light.

Designed to maximize both privacy and lake views, Silver Lake North makes every square foot of its narrow site count.

The home’s stacked layout creates a dramatic arrival sequence that opens to expansive outdoor living spaces, while deep roof overhangs, wood louvers, and passive cooling strategies keep the interior comfortable year-round. Thoughtfully placed glass frames the surrounding landscape, connecting the family to the outdoors without sacrificing privacy.

Every detail was designed to balance comfort, flexibility, and a strong connection to the beauty of Silver Lake.

A few weeks ago, after returning from studying abroad in Paris, we welcomed Riley Wetzel as an architectural summer intern.

Riley’s interest in architecture first began when her passion for hands-on artistic creation collided with an affinity for the logic behind spatial puzzles.

In the fall, she’ll be heading back to Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning for her final year in her masters program.

When asked what she was most looking forward to at MMA, Riley said that she was excited to familiarize herself with our design process, say yes to every on-site opportunity, and push herself to ask questions and stay curious.

We’re thrilled to have Riley join the team and look forward to watching her grow!
