Would consumers pay more for bread with a smaller environmental footprint? New Cornell University research suggests they may — provided taste meets expectations.

The findings offer an encouraging signal for intermediate wheatgrass, marketed as Kernza®, but consumer demand alone will not bring the perennial grain to commercial scale. Better genetics, higher yields, stronger supply chains and coordinated investment will all be needed to move it from the field to the bakery shelf.

Earlier soybean planting can mean cooler, wetter soils and a longer window of vulnerability for emerging seedlings.

Lumisena® Prime fungicide seed treatment from Corteva Agriscience combines four fungicides and one insecticide in a single-jug premix. The formulation provides broad-spectrum protection while simplifying the treatment process for independent seed retailers.

Tested across more than 100 locations over three years, Lumisena Prime delivered improved early-season plant health and an average yield advantage of one bushel per acre across research locations.

Why do some biological products perform consistently while others fall short?

Dr. Keri Carstens of Jord BioScience says function alone is not enough. A microbe must also colonize the root, persist through the season and perform within the existing soil community.

Across three years of soybean field trials, Jord’s new 9311 biostimulant delivered an average yield advantage of 2.6 bushels per acre and a 79 percent win rate across varied growing conditions.

After Hurricane Melissa devastated Jamaican farms, organic growers needed quality seed to begin rebuilding.

High Mowing Organic Seeds donated vegetable seed, Jamaican organizations managed the import process and Iowa State University’s Seed Science Center provided the required testing free of charge.

The collaboration turned donated seed into renewed hope for farmers, local food supplies and livelihoods.

AI is moving deeper into crop breeding — from mining germplasm and predicting crosses to identifying genes for editing.

But better models are only part of the equation. The biggest gains may depend on collecting, organizing and sharing better breeding data.

What does the next generation of plant breeders look like?

Karlee Klemm, a Borlaug Scholar and UC Davis student, is already working across peppers, sorghum and finger millet. Her background in livestock also gives her a unique perspective on the connections between plant breeding and the broader agricultural system.

She joins Seed World US to discuss the rapid pace of technology, agriculture’s interconnectedness and how programs like the Borlaug Scholarship are helping develop the next generation of agricultural scientists.
