Chapter 27: The County Line

For years, the county line had been a boundary.
Granbury was Gus's territory.
Parker County belonged to Squatchy.
But standing together at the county line, they realized something.
A line on a map didn't mean much to two guardians with the same mission.

Gus looked west.
Squatchy looked east.

Then Gus smiled.
"Think we can work together?"
Squatchy grinned.
"I was hoping you'd ask."

And just like that...
the county line wasn't a boundary anymore.

As they drove from one home to another, the stories began to flow.

One evening, after another long day helping homeowners, Gus and Squatchy sat on the end of the dock overlooking Lake Granbury.

For a while, neither one spoke.
They watched the sun dip below the horizon.

Finally, Gus smiled.

"I've spent a lot of years driving these roads."

Squatchy nodded.
"I can tell."
