PSA: If your electric panel, meter base, and entrance cable is from 1979 there is a good chance it is due for replacement. These cable jackets will become brittle and crack over time with all the exposure to the elements. The jacket itself cracking or splitting doesn't necessarily mean it'll expose the live wires but it will allow water to get inside the jacket. Once inside it can make its way through on the inside and into the meter base. Eventually making it's way all the way into the electrical panel. Water in any part of the cable is not ideal and water getting into the electric panel will cause corrosion on the wires and the panel parts. Water of course is also a good conductor of electricity posing a whole host of other hazardous scenarios.

We all take for granted how much we use electricity in our homes or businesses and it's rarely even thought about how it gets there until there is a problem. Just a visual inspection from time to time of your electrical equipment can make all the difference in having a proactive vs reactive upgrade of your critical equipment to safely distribute the electricity you rely on. A planned upgrade will be more convenient and cost effective. If your cable jacket looks like the one below, or even has a small split or gash, water could be making it's way into places it shouldn't.
