I’ve never really been much of a history buff—at least not when I was in school—but that’s changed over the years.

As a land surveyor, I spend a lot of time walking property boundaries that most people never see. Following those old lines, I often think about the people who walked them before me, sometimes hundreds of years ago. They left behind small traces of their presence, and we still come across them today.

One of the best reminders of the past is old barbed wire. Sometimes it’s still standing as a fence. Other times, it’s just rusted fragments buried where a fence line once ran.

Today at a yard sale, I found a display of antique barbed wire, each piece labeled with its name and patent date. To most people it’s just old wire, but to me it’s a fascinating piece of history and a connection to the people who once worked the same land I walk today.

Did you know, Some of our founding fathers were surveyors!

George Washington:
Appointed as the official surveyor for Culpeper County, Virginia, at age 17, and later served as the Surveyor General of Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson: Served as the County Surveyor for Albemarle County, Virginia.

Abraham Lincoln:
Worked as a Deputy County Surveyor in Illinois

Charles Mason & Jeremiah Dixon:
The English surveyors famously mapped the Mason-Dixon Line.

Hunting for boundary corners along Right of ways can be challenging. There is often ditch work and other obstacles that removed or damage boundary markers. We find what’s left and are able to recreate the originals for our clients.

These are the kinds of things I love coming across. This stone was called for in a description of a property from the 1800’s. The deed said the corner was marked by a stone marked HI, this initials of the property owner. 150 years and it still stands in its original location. To some, it’s just a stone in the woods, but with the right perspective it’s an incredible piece of history.
