Before anyone cuts the tree that's lifting your sidewalk, make two calls. The first is to the city forestry office: the strip between the sidewalk and the curb is usually public right-of-way, the tree in it is the city's, and pruning, root-cutting or removing it without a permit can bring a fine. Ask who pays while you're on the line; in many cities the walk is the homeowner's to keep safe, but a growing number repair walks lifted by their own trees at no charge or split the cost. The second call is to an ISA Certified Arborist, who can say what the roots will tolerate. In the meantime, have the lifted edge ground down or ramped with an asphalt wedge: an hour's work, and the trip hazard is gone today.
🌳 Why the slab lifts
Tree roots live in the top 12 to 18 inches of soil, where the oxygen is, and a 4-inch slab on compacted fill in a 3-foot planting strip leaves them nowhere to grow but up. What heaves the walk is the root flare and buttress roots thickening with age, not roots hunting for water. The tree is doing what trees do; the sidewalk was poured without room for it.
🛠️ The fixes, cheapest first
- Grind or ramp the lip. Cities do it by the thousand, and it buys years
- Re-pour the walk with room for the tree: curve it around the trunk, narrow it to the minimum your city allows, or bridge the roots on a short pier-and-beam section
- Swap rigid concrete for paving that gives: recycled rubber sidewalk panels, pervious pavers on a gravel base, or pervious concrete. They flex, lift and reset, and let air and water reach the roots
- While the slab is out, fix what's under it: widen the pit to 6 feet where the strip allows, replace compacted fill with structural soil or soil cells, and add a gravel drainage layer with a perforated pipe on wet ground. Roots head down when they can breathe down there
- A root barrier along the new edge, 18 to 24 inches deep, turns new roots downward, not sideways. It belongs in a fresh pit or a re-pave; retrofitting one against a mature tree means cutting roots
- Root pruning is the arborist's call, not the contractor's. Cutting large roots near the trunk of a mature tree can leave it unstable, and that's how street trees end up on parked cars in the next storm
🌱 When removal is the honest answer
The lip comes back after the fixes, the arborist finds the tree failing, or the species was wrong for the strip from the start, like a silver maple in 3 feet of lawn. Even then it's a permit, a removal, and a replacement tree sized to the space in a pit built for it. The same order applies to your own tree heaving a driveway or patio, with fewer permits.
