💧 Four-Year-Old Water Heater Replacement in Goodyear, Arizona

This water heater wasn’t replaced because of its age—it was replaced because the tank failed prematurely after a water softener was installed.

Softened water can accelerate the deterioration of a standard magnesium anode rod. When the water softener was installed, the magnesium rod was not replaced with an aluminum anode rod designed to perform better under these water conditions. Once the anode rod was depleted, the steel tank had less protection against corrosion, contributing to the early failure of this four-year-old water heater.

When installing a water softener, it’s important to inspect the water heater’s anode rod and select the proper replacement based on the manufacturer’s requirements and the home’s water chemistry.

Phay Plumbing Services replaced the failed water heater and made sure the new system was properly set up for the home’s softened water.

☀️ Ever wonder why your “cold” water isn’t very cold during an Arizona summer?

Here’s a perfect example. We checked the incoming water temperature at an exterior hose bib and it was coming out at 99°F! 🌡️

In Arizona, our water service lines generally don’t need to be buried several feet deep to protect them from a deep frost line like they do in colder parts of the country. With shallower underground piping, extremely hot soil, and triple-digit summer temperatures, the water entering your home can already be surprisingly warm before it ever reaches your plumbing fixtures.

The picture says it all — 99-degree water straight from the hose bib.

This is also something to keep in mind when diagnosing water-heater performance, recirculation systems, and complaints about cold water taking a long time to actually feel cold during the summer.

🚿 Zero-Entry Shower Remodel – Waterproofing & Prep

Another step forward on this custom bathroom remodel! Today we continued preparing the new zero-entry walk-in shower for a properly waterproofed and sloped shower system.

We installed cement backer board throughout the shower area to provide a solid, moisture-resistant surface for the upcoming waterproofing system. We also installed a SchluterÂŽ shower niche on the back wall, creating a clean, built-in storage area for shampoo, soap, and other shower essentials.

At the shower floor, we placed new concrete to establish a strong foundation approximately 2 inches below the surrounding slab elevation. Leaving this additional depth gives us the room needed for the next step—installing a dry-pack mortar shower bed and creating the proper slope toward the drain while maintaining the zero-entry, curbless shower transition.

Proper preparation underneath the tile is one of the most important parts of a bathroom remodel. The waterproofing, drainage, slope, and foundation are what help create a shower that’s designed to perform for years—not just look good when the tile is finished.

Not every sewer blockage is caused by roots, grease, or broken pipes. During a recent sewer drain cleaning service in Goodyear, Arizona, we found an unusual cause of a backed-up sewer line—a Coca-Cola can lodged inside the sewer pipe.

After diagnosing the sewer backup, our technicians used a professional sewer cable machine to clear the obstruction and restore flow. Once the drain was open, we performed a high-definition sewer camera inspection to verify the repair and identify what caused the blockage. The camera revealed a Coca-Cola can that had become wedged inside the sewer line, restricting wastewater flow and creating the backup.

Nothing beats the start of a bathroom transformation! 🔨

Today we wrapped up the demolition phase of another bathroom remodel in the Estrella Mountain community of Goodyear, Arizona. We removed the old vanity, toilet, floor tile, thinset, bathtub, and tub surround to make way for a beautiful zero-entry walk-in shower complete with a custom shower niche.

I know demolition isn’t the glamorous part, but it’s one of the most important steps. Taking everything down to a clean slate allows us to build it the right way from the ground up.

I have to admit, these bathroom remodels are some of my favorite projects. There’s something incredibly rewarding about taking an outdated bathroom and transforming it into a modern space that not only looks beautiful but is built to last.

Not your everyday plumbing job!

Wrapped up a really cool sink and dishwasher combo install in a casita today. Space is limited in these places, so every inch counts. These combo units are a great option if you want the convenience of a dishwasher without giving up a bunch of cabinet space.

A project like this takes a little more planning than a standard kitchen install, but everything came together and the customer is ready to enjoy it.

This project started with a 1960s-era handicap bathtub that just wasn’t working for the homeowner anymore. It was outdated, difficult to use, and didn’t provide the accessibility they truly needed.
