In Memory of Jerry Hastings, Beloved Surveyor, Mentor, and Friend

The surveying community has lost one of its most respected and cherished members. On August 21, Jerry Hastings passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, friendship, and dedication that touched countless lives across Idaho.

As his wife, Carolyn, shared:

"Jerry's passing was very unexpected. He was counting on being home Friday or Saturday. Jerry loved surveying, and he loved the many, many people he met throughout the years. He counted every one of you as a friend."

For nearly five decades, Jerry devoted his life to the profession he loved. Beginning his surveying career in 1977, he became a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in 1986 and went on to shape the landscape of Idaho through his work in both the private and public sectors.

Jerry's contributions were extraordinary. He helped retrace and re-establish the Ada County boundary with Boise County, collaborated with the Bureau of Land Management to re-monument Idaho's Initial Point, signed approximately 700 subdivision plats, and served as Ada County Surveyor for nearly two decades. His leadership extended well beyond his official duties through his dedicated service to the Idaho Society of Professional Land Surveyors, where he held numerous leadership roles and was honored with the Society's prestigious Distinguished Service Award in 2024.

Yet those who knew Jerry will remember more than his professional accomplishments. They will remember his generosity, his willingness to mentor others, his stories, his sense of humor, and the genuine friendships he built throughout his career. He was the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome and valued.

In the wake of this unexpected loss, Carolyn and the family are facing significant expenses and challenges. We invite friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by Jerry to help support his family during this difficult time.

Any contribution, no matter the size, is a meaningful way to honor Jerry's memory and demonstrate the care and friendship that he showed to so many throughout his life.

Please consider making a donation in Jerry's honor today:

This client wanted to adjust the boundary separating the house from the surrounding farmland. During our survey, we discovered that the earliest deeds for the property accurately described the land, but important details had been omitted from later deeds. Those omissions led to an error in a previous survey of the adjoining property.

After researching the historical records, we notified the neighboring landowners and established the boundary in its originally intended location. This is a good example of how reducing a legal description to simple dimensions can leave out critical information that determines the true location of a property line.

If you think your boundary may not be in the correct location, want to adjust the boundary between parcels you own, or are considering buying a home, give us a call.

The best time to have a boundary survey completed is before purchasing a property. The cost of a survey can often be negotiated with the seller or included in the mortgage, allowing you to finance it rather than paying for it after you've already spent your cash on the down payment.

Don't assume the seller, real estate agent, or even a previous survey correctly identifies the property boundaries. A professional boundary survey can prevent costly disputes and unpleasant surprises.

Call us first for a free consultation. We'll help you understand your options before you make one of the biggest investments of your life.

We were asked to locate and stake an aliquot part of a section for fence construction along a lease boundary. Several of the corners we needed to subdivide the section were original stone monuments. We replaced the stones with rebar and stamped aluminum caps, rebuilt the stone mounds and buried the original monument alongside.
Our invoice included abreviations like "PLSS" (Public Land Surveying System) and "GLO" (Government Land Office), abbreviations that are common vernacular to a surveyor, but not widely understood by the landowner. We'll be sure to explain those on future invoices.

Wow, check this out! The BC is a brass cap at the SW section corner, the furthest north 5/8" (MOF05) is at the west 1/4 corner. The other monuments are at 40', at a 1/64th corner, and at the 1/16th corner. The line stakes were set in 1979 & 2005.
