Gallery VEDA is in the foreground, with another VEDA home just beyond — our Jefferson model, built as a sister structure to the intact historic Prompt Pay Shaft House.

Gallery VEDA carries an 11,000-watt roof-mounted solar array, intentionally oversized because the panels face east and west. That DC power is managed through the Sol-Ark inverter/chargers and stored in lithium batteries for off-grid use.

I’ll get into the battery technology in the next post.

LIVING OFF GRID | GALLERY VEDA

This is what living off grid looks like most of the time: remarkably uneventful.

Gallery VEDA operates independently of the electrical grid through solar generation, battery storage and an automatically controlled backup generator.

As daylight gets shorter heading toward the winter solstice, the relationship between solar production, stored energy and backup generation becomes much more interesting.

Over the next several weeks, I’m going to use Gallery VEDA as a working classroom to explain the equipment, systems and routines behind year-round off-grid living at high elevation — solar panels, inverters and charge control, battery storage, generator auto-start, propane, maintenance and even the backup systems behind the backup systems.

Off-grid living isn’t about doing without. It’s about understanding and controlling where your energy comes from.

The original tiny house.

Built in the 1880s, the Golden Dollar Hoist House still stands along Golden Dollar Drive on Alps Hill-a remarkably compact piece of Colorado mining history that feels almost contemporary in its simplicity.

More than 140 years later, it sits quietly above the historic mining landscape, surrounded by autumn gold and looking toward 14,265-foot Mt. Blue Sky on the horizon.
