Up north they drain and cover. Here, the smart move is to keep the pool running all year. Water that circulates stays balanced, and equipment that runs doesn't freeze.

What actually changes for fall and winter: shorter pump run times, less chlorine demand as the water cools, and making sure your freeze protection kicks the pump on when a cold snap hits. That last one is the difference between a normal January and a cracked pump housing.

The most-used part of a custom pool is usually the shallowest. ☀️

A tanning ledge, six to nine inches of water, is where the toddlers play, where the dog lies down, and where the grown-ups park a chair with a drink and never leave. On most of our builds it's the spot that gets used every single day.

It's also one of the easiest features to plan in from the start and one of the hardest to add later.

Seeing a little green on the steps? Brush before you shock. 🧹

Algae gets a foothold in corners, steps, and behind ladders where water barely moves. Dumping chemicals on it without brushing just leaves it stuck to the plaster.

The order that works: brush the walls and steps hard, then shock in the evening, run the pump 24 hours, and clean the filter the next day. Skip a step and it comes right back.

Stocked for the calls we expect and the ones we don't: pump seals, o-rings, capacitors, a test kit, and enough gauges and fittings to finish most repairs in one visit instead of two.

Nobody wants to hear "we'll have to come back next week" in October when the pool is still getting used most days. The prep is boring. That's the point.

"How often should my pool pump run?" The question we get most. ⏱️

Short answer: long enough to turn all the water over at least once a day. In September heat that usually means 8 to 10 hours, and you can dial it back as the weather cools in October and November.

If your pump has to run all day just to keep the water clear, something else is going on: a dirty filter, low flow, or chemistry that's off. That's worth a look before it turns into an equipment problem.
