Architecture before CAD.

This iconic photograph captures the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto reviewing a scale model of his design for the Rovaniemi Aalto Center in Finland, with the hand–drawings featured at the background.

The model depicts the administrative and cultural heart of Rovaniemi, which Aalto redesigned after the city was largely destroyed during World Wąr II.

The master plan includes major landmarks such as Lappia Hall, Rovaniemi City Library, and the City Hall.

This curtain is made entirely of brick.

Created by artists Valda Jackson and Rodney Harris, Curtain transforms the façade of a community centre in Didcot, England, into what appears to be softly folded fabric.

Individually shaped bricks project at different depths, turning a rigid wall into a remarkably convincing textile illusion.

Would you have guessed it was brick?

This pavilion is built entirely from stone—including its roof.

Completed in 2023 at Joseph Walsh Studio in Fartha, County Cork, the Stone Vessel was designed by Sheila O’Donnell and John Tuomey as a contemporary interpretation of Ireland’s traditional “rambling houses”—places for music, storytelling and gathering.

Its sharply faceted exterior conceals a curved acoustic chamber inside. Fifteen stonemasons assembled the 9-metre-high (30-ft) structure by hand, gradually corbelling each layer inward until the stone roof closed above them. Most of the fieldstone was quarried directly from the surrounding site.

From the outside it looks like a solid block. Inside, it feels like an inverted stone well.
