Before and after in my own garden.

Squeezing in much needed w**ding within a busy garden season for my clients. It’s hard to balance care of my gardens and house of others.

Little by little is the best way to take care of your space.

Just start, is what I always say when you are overwhelmed with a w**d pressure area.

Trust me you will be glad you did.

I cannot believe this bed use to be just grass! The client desired a nice view while in their pool as well as some added privacy. Now a few years since the install, I love seeing how the garden is filling in and providing a beautiful habit to pollinators and a relaxing view for those in and out of the pool.

First step to switch over the cut flower garden…cutting back all my cool temp flowers: larkspur, poppies, nigella, and sweet peas. I sprinkled nigella seeds everywhere! I love that plant so much! The couple of days of 100 degree days did the trick with turning over these plants to have ripe seed. I saved some before composting the plants. Now the rain will come in and give the snap dragons, yarrow, and dahlias a good drink with all the rain rolling in. Later this week I’ll plant zinnias and celosia to see if we can get some blooms late August into the fall.

Sweet Pea Seed Cycle is 6 months to harvest seed for Zone 7a (just north of Philadelphia, PA).

🌱 January 1: Sweet Peas germinated in wet paper towels sealed in a ziplock bag.

🌱 January 15: Germinated seeds planted in soil inside the home.

🌱 February 15: Hardened off Sweet Pea plants to adjust to outside elements.

🌱 March 1: Plants transplanted into the garden.

🌱 June 1: Blooms start rolling in for the next 4 weeks.

🌱 June 30: Seeds ready to harvest (store in a sealed jar in a cool location until January)

**There has been a few rare occasions of seed dropping in June, germinating, AND overwintering to the following season. This year I may experiment with this by planting in July. My theory is the heat causes the plants to grow more slowly until temps cool and then I believe they go dormant until next spring. Worth a shot if they do overwinter because it would mean earlier blooms and more of them as they normally stop flowering once temperatures are too high.***

That’s a wrap. With 100 degrees rolling in this week, we are saying goodbye to sweet peas, nigella, poppies, and larkspur. Snapdragons should hold on…dahlias are now in bud! Planting zinnias in the garden next week after I demo the cool weather flowers. I’ll wait until the heat wave passes using the spent plants to shield the soil from the 100 degrees.
