We’re honored to share that JMZ’s Renovation of Milne Library at SUNY Geneseo has received the AIA Eastern New York “Best of the Best” Honor Award!

“With an incredibly sensitive approach, this project brings the library into the current age as a space for collaborative learning and a modern social gathering space.”

Presented during the AIAENY Design Awards celebration at The Arts Center of the Capital Region in Troy, New York, the award recognizes projects that exemplify excellence in design, innovation, sustainability, and service to the communities they serve. In announcing this year’s honorees, AIA Eastern New York President and JMZ Vice-President Karin Kilgore-Green, AIA, noted that the recognized projects demonstrate “the powerful impact thoughtful design can have on people, places, and communities” and exemplify architecture’s ability to “enrich lives and shape a better future.”

Originally constructed in 1966, Milne Library has long served as the intellectual heart of SUNY Geneseo (Tagged). This transformative renovation reimagines the building as a vibrant, transparent, and welcoming destination for learning, collaboration, and community engagement. New expansive glazing introduces abundant natural light and captures sweeping views of the Genesee River Valley, while a reimagined interior provides a diverse mix of study, collaboration, and gathering spaces designed to support the evolving needs of students, faculty, and visitors.

Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the design. Delivered on time and within budget, Milne Library became SUNY Geneseo’s first fully electrified building, eliminating fossil fuel use and advancing New York State’s climate goals. High-performance glazing, daylight-responsive lighting controls, automated shading systems, and energy-efficient building systems contribute to a healthier, more resilient learning environment.

We are grateful to our project partners State University Construction Fund, IMEG, Regent Design Service, McMillan Pazdan Smith, Manning Squires Hennig, Ysreal A Seinuk, Fisher Associates, Larsen Engineers, RL Young, and the many individuals whose dedication and collaboration helped bring this vision to life. It is an honor to see our commitment to creating impactful campus environments recognized and celebrated alongside a distinguished group of projects from across the region.

JMZ is proud to announce that the Central New York Chapter of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) has recognized the exterior concrete stair design and ex*****on of the recently completed Cornish Van Hoesen Hall renovation. We were excited to collaborate with and on the design and construction of this feature as part of the campus's newly renovated Communications and Media Studies Department. The new exterior stair provides a direct connection to the building's renovated entrance, improving access for students arriving from nearby parking areas and other campus amenities.

The building’s renovation was first envisioned within our 2011 Facilities Master Plan and JMZ was later awarded the design.

Each year, Tri-County United Way hosts 518 Day, a region-wide day of volunteerism supporting dozens of local nonprofits and community-based organizations. Hundreds of volunteers from across the Tri-county area come together on May 18 to give back and celebrate the spirit of philanthropy that strengthens our neighborhoods and communities.

JMZ is participating in a regional food drive with all donations supporting Tri-County United Way-funded nonprofit partners: Comfort Food Community, North Country Ministry, Salvation Army, and Family Service Association.

This past week, JMZ attended the Cornish-Van Hoesen Hall C-Wing ribbon cutting! This marked the conclusion of 2.5 years of construction and a new chapter for the SUNY Cortland Communications and Media Studies Department. The $26 million project adapted existing internal spaces providing state-of-the-art media production classrooms, labs, and facilities. Student media organizations are now centrally located, efficiently working together while enhancing students’ knowledge of production and collaboration with other outlets.

The project was first envisioned within our 2011 facilities master plan. JMZ was later awarded the building design.

Planning and design support the transformation of an institution’s scale and amenities. These processes can grow community colleges into campuses that host four-year and post-graduate programs, enhancing the educational support and resources available to local communities.

JMZ embraces this work by guiding community colleges towards growth and efficiency, helping them attract new students and programs.

As the spring semester begins, campuses come back to life with students returning for another semester or even stepping onto campus for the first time. Intentional campus environments, shaped by how students live and learn, help create cozy, welcoming spaces that support the next generation of professionals while at their home away from home.
