One of the biggest things I think about when designing an edible garden is how much production we can get from the space we have.

Because you don’t need the biggest garden.

You need a smarter garden.

GROW YOUR GROCERY STORE 🌿 | Part 1

Here’s one of the first things I consider when designing an edible garden:

What do you actually buy every week?

🥬 Lettuce
🌿 Herbs
🍅 Tomatoes
🍓 Fruit

Don’t fill your garden with plants just because they looked pretty at the nursery.

Design it around the food you actually eat.

That’s how a backyard, patio, or even a small garden can become a beautiful, productive extension of your kitchen.

You DON’T need a huge backyard to grow your own food. 🌱

If I were designing a garden for a small patio, balcony, townhouse, or apartment, I wouldn’t start by buying plants.

I’d start with the SUN. ☀️

Watch your space for a day and figure out how many hours of direct sunlight you actually get.

6–8 hours? 🍅🌶️🍋
You have lots of options for fruiting crops.

3–4 hours? 🌿🥬
You can still create a productive garden with plants suited to lower light.

That’s the designer’s approach:

Don’t force the garden onto the space. Design the garden around the space.

If I had just a patio, balcony, or tiny backyard in Southern California, I’d focus on plants that give me the most food for the space—cherry tomatoes, peppers, herbs, lettuce, strawberries and a dwarf citrus tree. 🍋

The secret isn’t having more space.
It’s choosing the right plants and designing vertically.

The biggest gardening mistake I ever made? Planting before planning. 🌱

When I first started gardening, I thought the hardest part was getting plants in the ground.

I was wrong.

☀️ Sunlight
💧 Watering
📏 Spacing
🌳 Mature plant size
🌱 Soil

These decisions matter before you plant.

Now, I spend much more time designing and planning a garden before buying a single plant—and it saves years of frustration.
