Careers in Construction Month | Meet Ryan Jenson, Project Manager II

For Ryan, the path into construction started with a change of direction at exactly the right time.
He came to NDSU planning to study civil engineering with a focus on design. An internship with a general contractor shifted his perspective. Working alongside a construction team, he realized he had more interest in building than in designing. He switched to construction management and found his footing.

Three years ago, Ryan joined Rice Companies as a Project Manager II. When asked what he loves most about the work, his answer is straightforward: no two days are the same. That variety is what keeps him engaged and is one of the things he would tell anyone curious about the industry.

His advice for someone considering construction but not sure where to start? Give it a try. The career paths are more varied than most people expect, whether that is project management, design, superintendent work on the jobsite, or a trade like electrical, steel er****on, or carpentry. There is a place in this industry for a lot of different people, and the best way to find yours is to jump in.

Concrete & Foundation Repairs | Pomp's Tire Service | St. Cloud, MN

At Pomp's Tire Service in St. Cloud, our Rice Service team tackled two concrete repairs that were affecting the building and daily operations.

At the main entrance, a deteriorating concrete stoop was allowing water to undermine the concrete block foundation beneath it. Our team removed the failing stoop, replaced the compromised foundation blocks, and re-poured a new stoop to protect the building going forward.

Inside, a worn concrete apron at the overhead door had created an uneven transition to the warehouse floor, creating a rough and unsafe surface for forklift traffic. Our team removed the existing apron and poured a new one matched to the warehouse floor grade for a smooth, safe, and level transition.

Two repairs. One team. The facility is back to working the way it should.

Careers in Construction Month | Meet Wes Schoenherr, Design Production Manager

For Wes, construction started at home. Growing up, his dad had what he calls "chronic remodeler syndrome," and almost every year the family was remodeling, adding on, or building something new. Wes worked through the designs on paper to make sure the dimensions worked, and then they built it themselves, from framing and electrical to plumbing and drywall.

A love for drawing and math led him to a high school drafting class, and he was hooked. He went on to SCTCC's Architectural Construction Technology program and graduated with a 4.0. After being accepted into three master's programs in architecture, he chose to start working instead. That was 15 years ago, and he has been with Rice Companies ever since.

His advice for anyone considering a career in construction is simple. Talk to somebody. Ask questions, ask about job shadowing, and don't be afraid to reach out. As Wes puts it, many people in this industry are more than willing to share what they do and mentor others in their community.
