Where should a backyard putting green go?
Usually not in the middle of the lawn. A green works best in a space that's too narrow or awkward for anything else but still easy to reach: a side yard, a corner, or the strip between a pool deck and a wall.
In this Queen Creek backyard we designed, the green sits in an elevated strip between an existing curved wall and the perimeter wall. A few things make it work:
• It's on the way to somewhere. The route from the pool deck to the fire pit runs right past it.
• It has clear edges. The two walls contain it, so it reads as its own space.
• It's lit. Path lights line its edge for evening use.
• It stays out of the way. You can see it from the deck, but it never sits between the house and the water.
That leaves the lawn open for play and the deck open around the pool and spa, which were built through our pool partner.
