Hand-cut stringers are the new knob-and-tube wiring. They worked back then, but you wouldn't put them in new work today.
Every notch removes structure and opens end grain right where water sits. At Decks Rx we kept replacing decks whose stairs had already been replaced once. So we quit cutting stringers and built CleanStairs: continuous wrapped stringers, tread assemblies on brackets, sealed tops, and no exposed tread ends.
Send this to the guy who's still hand-cutting stringers. Comment STAIRS and we'll DM you when the CleanStairs Builder Guide releases.
