American Museum of Natural History - Historic Protection for a Global Icon

During the multi-year re-roofing of the American Museum of Natural History, SlopeShield Plus Self-Adhered was chosen to help protect this iconic, 150-year-old structure, all while it remained open to the public.

Protecting More Than a Roof. Preserving History.

Originally constructed in 1905, MacDonough Hall at the United States Naval Academy has stood for more than a century.

SlopeShield Plus SA was selected in the reroofing of MacDonough Hall, a building more than 100 years old at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Given the building’s historic significance and active campus setting, the project required a solution that could protect the existing structure while accommodating modern construction schedules.

SlopeShield Plus SA allowed the roofing team to establish early dry-in conditions, helping protect the building from weather exposure throughout the reroofing process.

Designed to shed bulk water while remaining v***r permeable, SlopeShield Plus SA delivered proven durability, superior adhesion, and reliable moisture management—qualities essential when working with aging and delicate substrates. Installed as a v***r permeable air barrier system, the fully adhered membrane helps protect the structure from moisture intrusion while allowing the wall assembly to dry, supporting long-term durability and building performance.

Because the project utilized panelized construction, PanelFlashing SA and VaproFlashing SA were used to treat panel seams and transitions, helping maintain continuity of the air barrier system once the panels were set on-site. This approach streamlined installation while enhancing moisture management and enclosure performance.

The Cheaha State Park Lodge (Delta, AL)

SlopeShield Plus SA from VaproShield was selected to protect the floors and roof deck during construction and provide long-term durability. Applied in the factory with joints treated on-site, SlopeShield Plus SA forms a v***r-permeable air barrier and offers temporary weather protection, keeping the timber dry during rain, wind, and extended construction schedules. Its durability, adhesion, and resilience give construction teams confidence to work efficiently while safeguarding the wood decks.

The Wayside Church addition is a new construction expansion designed to seamlessly integrate with the existing facility. The project team selected a comprehensive VaproShield building enclosure system to create a continuous air barrier across multiple substrates while delivering effective moisture management throughout the building envelope.

A key element of the project was the use of VaproLiqui-Shield, VaproShield’s fluid-applied air barrier membrane, applied directly over CMU walls with a roller. The fluid-applied application allowed the membrane to fully conform to the CMU surface, sealing irregularities, cracks, and transitions that are common with masonry construction. This approach provided a durable, continuous air barrier that simplified detailing and enhanced overall building envelope reliability.

PanelShield SA sheet membrane was installed over CDX plywood areas, delivering a compatible, v***r permeable air barrier that tied into VaproLiqui-Shield fluid-applied membrane. To support drainage and drying behind the exterior cladding, VaproShims were installed behind horizontal hat channels, creating a rainscreen cavity that will safely manage moisture through drainage, ventilation, and drying.

On the roof, RoofBlock HT, air and v***r barrier roofing underlayment, was incorporated at critical areas including eaves and valleys, providing added protection at transitions where water exposure is most concentrated.

The result is a cohesive roof-to-wall air barrier strategy that supports durability, moisture control, and long-term building performance for the expanding church facility.

For this project, SlopeShield Plus SA was installed across 80,000 square feet of OSB roof substrate. During construction, the membrane served as a v***r permeable air barrier and temporary weather protection layer, helping shield the roof assembly from snow, rain, and wind while still allowing the substrate to dry. This fully adhered membrane also provided durability and reliable traction for installers, maintaining performance under active jobsite conditions.

Beyond the construction phase, SlopeShield Plus SA continues to deliver value as part of the completed roof assembly. Its air barrier properties contribute to improved building efficiency, supporting long-term energy performance in the high-altitude climate of Vail.

SlopeShield Plus SA provides a dual-purpose solution, protecting the structure during construction while enhancing efficiency and resilience once the building is occupied.

This project was recognized by the Colorado Roofing Association, at their 2025 awards program, highlighting the successful integration of high-performance roofing practices in challenging mountain environments.
