Have you ever wondered what "sustainability" really means? The truth is that there's a lot of nuance around the environmental impact of the products we make and use. Here are some questions to ask that address different elements of sustainability:
-How far did this product or material travel to get to me?
-Has this thing been repurposed or reclaimed--or could it be repurposed in the future?
-Does it come from a responsibly managed environment?
-Will it last for years before needing to be replaced? Can it be maintained, repaired, and restored, or is it designed to fall apart?
These are some of our sustainable wood options:
Sapele: Our Sapele, an African alternative to Mahogany, is Forest Stewardship Council Certified. That means it comes from carefully managed forests.
Accoya: Accoya is Radiata pine treated with vinegar, transforming it from into a very strong, stable wood. Accoya is Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold, meaning it's engineered for environmental safety and circularity.
White Oak: This customer favorite, like all our domestically sourced options, has a lower carbon footprint because it hasn't had to cross an ocean to get to the US. It's also incredibly strong and durable, meaning you won't need to replace White Oak projects for years to come.
So, if your goal is to be kinder to the earth with your next home project, you've got options.
