A Day in the Life of a U.P. Painter

There’s a phrase we use around here when it comes to exterior painting: "Wait for it."

Because in the Upper Peninsula, painting a house isn’t just about having the right tools or the right crew — it’s about timing. And timing up here? That’s a whole different beast.

You don’t just wake up one morning in April and start slapping stain on a cabin. You wait. You watch. You test the air. You check the dew point. You listen to the wind. You ask yourself, "Is this the day the weather’s lying to me?" Because in the U.P., it probably is.

🧊 The Freeze Factor

Even when the snow’s melted and the sun’s out, the ground can still be frozen. That means moisture stays trapped in wood, and paint won’t bond right. You’ve got to wait for the thaw — not just the surface thaw, but the deep one. The kind that tells you the boards are ready to breathe again.

🌧️ The Sneaky Spring Storms

One minute it’s 60 and sunny, the next it’s sleeting sideways. Or a storm comes along and dumps 50 inches or so. You learn to check Accuweather and seven other weather apps,watch the news and immediately disregard all of them.You have to trust your gut. And you learn to have a backup plan, that’s indoors! One thing I’ve about spring in the U.P. doesn’t care about your schedule. All three days of it come and go whenever they please.

🪵 The Cabin Comeback

Most of our exterior work is on cabins, camps, and lake homes — places that have taken a beating all winter. When the weather finally gives us a window, we move fast. We prep, we scrape, we sand, we stain. We know we’ve got a short runway before the next storm rolls in or the blackflies start dive-bombing our necks.

🧠 The Yooper Mindset

Painting up here isn’t just a job — it’s a rhythm. It’s knowing when to wait and when to hustle. It’s understanding that nature calls the shots, and we’re just trying to keep up. It’s about patience, precision, and pride.

✨ Between a Brush and a Hard Place

A Day in the Life of a Local Craftsman – Entry #2

There’s a funny stretch of time in the Eastern Upper Peninsula — that in‑between season where the snow hasn’t quite given up, but you can feel the sun trying to make a comeback. One day you’re brushing snow off the truck, the next day you’re standing outside thinking, “Yeah… I could probably paint in this,” even though you definitely shouldn’t.

Right now, we’re in that exact moment.

The flakes are still flying, the mornings are still cold enough to freeze your coffee solid, and the wind still has that bite that reminds you winter isn’t done with us yet. But underneath all that, you can feel it: exterior painting season is coming. Slowly. Stubbornly. But it’s coming.

And around here, that shift is everything.

Soon the snowbanks will shrink, the sun will stick around longer, and the phone will start ringing with folks ready to get their cabins, camps, and homes looking fresh again. Before long, it won’t be snowflakes hitting your face — it’ll be blackflies. And honestly, that’s how you know painting season has officially begun in the U.P.

This time of year is all about preparation. Checking equipment. Stocking up on stain and paint before the seasonal rush. Lining up projects from Schoolcraft to Luce, Mackinac to Alger, and everywhere in between. Every exterior has its own story — sun‑faded siding, peeling stain, weather‑beaten decks, and cabins that have survived one too many winters without a fresh coat.

There’s something exciting about it, though. Exterior season is where the real transformation happens. You take a home that’s been through the worst of U.P. weather and give it a new life — stronger, brighter, protected, and ready for whatever the next winter throws at it.

So while the snow is still falling today, I’m already thinking ahead. Planning. Prepping. Getting ready to roll into another season of restoring the Eastern U.P. one project at a time.

This is Entry #2 in my ongoing blog — a look behind the scenes, a snapshot of the work, and a reminder that even in the coldest corner of Michigan, there’s always something worth building, fixing, or painting.

🏀 Fresh Look for the Newberry High School Gym!

Superior Handyman Services wrapped up a project inside the Newberry High School gymnasium a couple months ago — home of TAS (Tahquamenon Area Schools) and the Newberry Indians — and this one was a blast.

Those old acoustical tiles you see in the photos were dirty, worn, and nearly impossible to clean, but with a little creativity (and a lot of patience), we brought them back to life. They look brand new again.

We used:

• Sherwin-Williams Pro Acrylic on the upper acoustical tiles for a clean, durable finish
• Sherwin-Williams Pre‑Catalyzed Epoxy on the lower areas — tough enough to stand up to just about anything… even Newberry’s high school basketball players

It was a lot of fun helping beautify a space that means so much to this community. Proud to serve the Eastern Upper Peninsula and proud to help TAS keep their facilities looking sharp.

🌲🎨 From “banana‑yellow surprise” to “relax, your walls aren’t yelling anymore.”

This eastern U.P. condo started out bright. Like… “did the sun move inside?” bright.
So we calmed it down with a whole palette of greens — soft, clean, and way easier on the eyes. Now the walls aren’t competing with that gorgeous Manistique lighthouse view. Honestly, the place finally looks like it belongs in the U.P. instead of a tropical fruit aisle.

Superior Handyman Services can handle anything from a full‑unit repaint to touching up a couple pieces of trim you’ve been pretending not to notice. No judgment — we’ve all been there.

🎨 1. Yes that photo’s from last season — but let’s be honest… winter does the same damage every year.
So if your siding looks like it survived a bar fight with Lake Michigan, you’re not alone.

The end of winter is finally peeking around the corner, and Superior Handyman Services is gearing up for another round of “fixing what the U.P. destroyed.”

Here’s the kicker:
My summer schedule is filling up faster than a bait shop on opening day.

We proudly serve Schoolcraft, Mackinac, and Luce Counties, handling everything winter beat up — siding, trim, decks, and all the “mystery damage” that magically appears when the snow melts.
