October is when your lawn builds next year.

Up top, things look quiet. Growth slows, mowing gets easier. Underneath, St. Augustine and zoysia are storing energy in their roots to get through winter and push green-up in the spring.

That's why we don't put nitrogen on those grasses in the fall. It forces top growth at exactly the wrong time. What our Foundations program does this time of year is work on the soil itself: organic matter, biology, and helping water actually soak into our tight, rocky ground instead of running off.

And we test before we treat. If your soil is short on potassium, the test will say so, and that's when a fall potassium feeding makes sense. If it isn't, we skip it. No guessing, no automatic winterizer.

A small layer of leaves may look harmless, but leaving them on your lawn can trap moisture, attract pests, and block the sunlight and airflow your grass needs.

Your sprinkler controller still thinks it's July.

Nights are in the 60s, the days are shorter, and your lawn is using a lot less water than it was two months ago. But most controllers around here are still running the exact same summer program.

Five-minute fix: cut every zone's runtime by about a third. Then watch the grass for a week or two. If it holds its color, you're good. If one spot starts looking dry, bump just that zone back up.

Shady zones can usually come down even more. And if you've got a rain sensor, make sure it actually works, because a fall front can drop an inch on us in an afternoon.

Your water bill will notice. So will the lawn. Soggy grass going into winter is weaker grass.

Quick reminder for the do-it-yourself crowd: this is pre-emergent week.

If you want to keep poa annua and the rest of the winter w**d crowd out of your yard come February, the window is right now through about the first week of October, while soil temps drop through 70.

Read the back of the bag, not the front. You're looking for dithiopyr or pendimethalin. Spread it evenly, then water it in with about half an inch within a day or two. Skip the watering and it never activates.

One more thing. If you're planning to seed or lay sod this fall, read the label before you spread anything. These products can keep new grass from getting established too.
