Regularly rinsing and flushing your gray tank is important for several key reasons:
1. Eliminating Foul Odors
Although it doesn't hold toilet waste, a gray tank can smell just as bad as a black tank. Over time, trapped cooking grease, food particles, soap scum, hair, and body oils rot inside the tank. Rinsing flushes out these decomposing organic residues before they can cause foul odors to back up into your living space.
2. Preventing Mold and Slime Growth
The damp, dark interior of a gray tank is the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and slime mold. If you leave your gray tank valve open at a full-hookup campsite, liquids drain out continuously while sticky debris is left behind to coat the tank floor and walls. Periodically filling and rinsing the tank washes away this breeding ground.
3. Restoring Accurate Sensor Readings
One of the most common RV frustrations is a tank monitor that reads "full" even when it is completely empty. Grease buildup and soap scum film easily coat the internal sensor probes, causing them to misread. Thoroughly rinsing the tank lifts this film and restores proper sensor functionality.
4. Preventing Clogs and Pipe Sludge
As soapy residue and grease mix, they form a thick sludge that settles on the bottom of the tank. Over time, this sludge hardens and narrows the plumbing pathways, leading to slow-draining sinks or stubborn clogs. Rinsing creates the necessary turbulence to lift and flush these heavy solids down the sewer hose.
5. Keeping the Inside of Your Sewer Hose Clean
When dumping your RV tanks, the standard procedure is to empty the black tank first, followed by the gray tank. Rinsing your gray tank ensures you have a large volume of soapy, pressurized water to flush out any lingering raw sewage debris left inside your main sewer hose.
