Island Carpentry

Island Carpentry Designing and Building Finely Crafted Net Zero Energy Homes Island Carpentry is committed to building healthy green energy efficient and Zero Energy Homes.

We offer an array of options to dramatically reduce the annual energy bill of a new home. Our designs incorporate passive solar orientation, super insulation, and options to produce electricity and hot water from solar. We would like to work with you to design and build a finely crafted energy efficient green home. As builders we have made a commitment to renovate homes in a manner that will make

them as energy efficient as possible. We work with energy auditors to carefully test the home for air tightness, determine the amount of installed insulation, assess the condition of the heating system, and evaluate the overall performance of the structure. Based on the results of the audit we can then include proposals to improve the energy efficiency of the home. We are located on Georgetown Island in Midcoast Maine. While many of our projects are on the coastal peninsulas, close to the City of Bath and the Town of Brunswick, we build throughout the entire region

Sometimes the greatest acts of humanity come from the people who have the least to give.

In 1847, Ireland was in the grip of the Great Famine. Families were starving. Entire villages were disappearing. An ocean away, the Choctaw Nation had every reason to turn inward. Just sixteen years earlier, thousands of Choctaw men, women, and children had been forced from their ancestral homeland during the Trail of Tears. Many had died from disease, hunger, and exposure. They were still struggling to rebuild their own lives when they learned of Ireland's suffering.

Yet despite their own poverty and unimaginable hardship, the Choctaw people gathered $170—roughly the equivalent of several thousand dollars today—and sent it across the Atlantic to help complete strangers they would never meet. It wasn't a gift from people who had abundance. It was a sacrifice from people who understood loss. They recognized suffering because they had lived it themselves, and they answered cruelty not with bitterness, but with compassion.

Ireland has never forgotten. In County Cork, the stunning "Kindred Spirits" monument stands as a permanent tribute to the Choctaw Nation's extraordinary generosity. More than 175 years later, the bond between the Irish people and the Choctaw remains a powerful reminder that empathy can outlive tragedy, that kindness can echo across generations, and that history is often shaped not only by the powerful—but by ordinary people who choose humanity when they have every reason not to.
